Not too many people fished in the miserable wind and questionable ice conditions. Went from wheelers point over Pine Island and out to 18ft. Had 2 wheelers and a Condo (Assault) with trailer and skis. Found 6-9 inches of ice thoughout. One member of party took his wheeler out to 25ft. and said there was 7-9 inches out there also. Also went all the way down to morris gap without problems. Just have to watch for snow drifts with wheeler. Snowmobile would be better. Fishing was outstanding. More 2+ pound walleyes then we needed, but the bite for us was mostly after 3pm.

Gconda, when you went over Pine Is. were you closer to the gap or the Morris wash out area when you caught all your eyes? Heading up and would appreciate being steered in the right direction...Thanks

Bob,
When are you heading up? Jim said they may be going this Fri-Sun. There is a very small chance I could make it, but probably won't know until Thursday. Anxious to get on some ice.
Dean Thorn

Hey Dean, We're heading up on Friday morning at 4AM. Got a cabin rented at the Wigwam for Friday and Sat. night. So far it's Jim. Tony and his brother, my buddy Kirk from Big Lake, myself, and possibly my girlfriend (yea she's talking to me again). The cabin has three bedrooms and sleeps seven.Tony is going to let Jim use his older Honda and the rest of us all have our own machines. Anybody you can borrow a four wheeler or snowmobile from? If Lea would want to go, and my girlfriend is going to go, I can still get a seperate cabin for the four of us. They have one left. Just a thought.....Give me a call on the cell phone.
(763)229-8522
Bob

Eyewitness, Just follow the stakes that Adrians put out over Pine. Go West and fish in the area of the lone pine on shore. You cant go wrong being anywhere in that area 13-18ft morning and evening then deeper for saugers mid morning and early afternoon. Gary

Gary, that is typically where I go every year and hit em with out fail. Just wanted to verify ice cond. and that the bite was where I thought it would be. Thanks again!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
