College Hockey - 2011/2012

UND will win it all next year with 10 freshman. One of those Freshman, Rocco Grimaldi, wants to be a pastor when he is done with hockey. This UND team will be a bunch of saints with Grimaldi in the locker room. Expect no more DUI's and frostbitten toes from these angels.

Brittain has been thinking that something wasn't right with his knee for a long time - since before his freshman year. But they thought time and excercise would heal it. A couple weeks ago he was at a goalie camp in Canada and tweaked it again - then realized things weren't healing and he needs surgery. Too bad - DU will drop a few spots because of his absence.

My picks are;

UND

CC

UW

AA

SCSU

DU

UM

UMD

UNO

BSU

MSU

MTU

Look like frattin and Filnley must be back in town.

I havent decided how things will shake out yet. I am sure I will be spot on though.

Ill predict soon and then again for the pre-season. UND will not be on top of either of my lists. Im thinking a 3rd place Gophs right now.

Seems like a lot of the top teams lost quite a bit heading into next year.

I'm not sure about other teams but I highly doubt SCSU will finish that high unless Lee carries them. Their D corp will be too young/inexperienced (although probably improved) to finish in the top spot.

Garrett Haar has decommitted from Northeastern. He's currently looking at Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota, Minnesota, Denver, and BU. I'm crossing my fingers that Mr Herter pulls him to the Twin Ports. Double bonus?!?

  • 3 weeks later...

Uh oh, might as well get this out of the way. I've made enough lawn mower Frattin & UND jokes to deserve some heat. JT Brown (frozen 4 MVP and absolute animal in finals)got caught using another guys ID 2 weeks before his 21st Bday. Gave a false name to the officer after attending Grandmas in Canal Park (mmm getting thirsty right now). Not entirely surprising.

What was kinda funny is that he tried to bolt from the officers. Here's the link to the story.

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/204209/

Here's my favorite quote of what happened. "While the officer was writing the citation and talking to dispatch, Brown allegedly ran around the officer and tried to exit the front doors. The officer reached out and grabbed Brown by the back of his jacket. Brown was able to break the hold and went through the doors directly into another officer. He changed direction and started running down the sidewalk but an officer was able to grab onto his sweat shirt.

An officer reported that Brown flailed his arms while spinning in a circle. An officer pulled Brown’s sweat shirt over his head and was able to get him in a bear hug and take him to the ground. Two officers put Brown’s hands behind his back as he continued to squirm and try to get off the ground. One officer kneeled on Brown in the mid-back area and another kneeled on his shoulder to hold him down while handcuffs were applied."

Pulled his sweatshirt over his head? Has this guy ever been in a hockey fight? Never let em do that!

Also seriously, who here thinks you would get away with using a fake ID after the F4 win this year? The whole town was captivated by it. JT Brown is pretty recognizable. Amusing

Wow that was a dumb move, even worse when you run, that could add to the trouble. You never give a fake to a cop, heck he was just going to get a fine if he didn't decide to take off. It still might be a slap on the wrist but who knows for sure. But hey since it was a UMD player I will have to chalk it up to boys will be boys. Too bad he doesn't play for UND because a prison sentence would have been mandatory. smile

I was a ok with it until he had the multiple attempts to run. That's a [PoorWordUsage] move. These are also the type of things that makes a player think, maybe I should just sign a pro deal rather then sit out a couple games. I could be wrong but isn't this at least a gross misdemeanoer.

If he ws at und hackstol <after giving the police double hackstols> would make him an assitant captain.

Lucia would kick him off the team, he would also state the fact the brown developed too fast as a freshman and no longer fits the mold.

Gotta laugh at that. I don't know why he ran either. Clearly wasn't thinking very well at that point. Ticket and slap on the wrist, or court date + criminal record stuff? Sandelin said he would deal with this, whatever that means.

Are we keeping score of which team screws up more off the ice? Thats one for Duluth

Lets not keep score, UND and UofM don't have a great track record for this kind of stuff.

Guess this falls more into the 2013/14 category, but linked here is an article from the SC Times proposing an annual MN college hockey tourney at the X. No hard deets yet, but it sounds like 4 teams would rotate (between MN, SC, Mankato, Bemidji, and Duluth). Could be fun, would keep some rivalries in play, and could augment/replace some revenue for all teams involved. Who doesn't love seeing college hockey at the X?

What a fun tourney that would be every year!! Would love to see the gophs still make it to Bemidji every other year or so!!

I like the idea as well. I don't think it will be as fun as the current Final Five but it still would be great hockey.

That is pretty interesting, a very good hire for WM. Pretty sure they wind up in the Super Conference now, or has it been made official already?

WM should wait behind SCSU if you ask me. Huskies are clearly the better team, have good tradition, and have committed $$$ to renovating their arena (which is already bigger than WMU). The problem is WM may help lure Notre Dame with their close proximity. Notre Dame is seen as crucial to a Versus TV deal. Also ND has said they prefer a 7 team conference as this leaves further freedom in scheduling closer non-con games. But I suppose WMU is a good bet to join, and they clearly want to.

Below is a link of a cool analysis on points returning by WCHA team in 11/12:

Blog post with returning points by WCHA team

1. Colorado College 292 (out of 391)

2. Denver 233 (out of 357)

3. St Cloud State 221 (out of 314)

4. Minnesota-Duluth 218 (out of 398)

5. Nebraska-Omaha 216 (out of 348)

6. Minnesota State 193 (out of 279)

7. Wisconsin 183 (out of 357)

8. North Dakota 177 (out of 471)

9. Michigan Tech 169 (out of 196)

10. Minnesota 151 (out of 294)

11. Alaska-Anchorage 150 (out of 244)

12. Bemidji State 138 (out of 234)

Does that mean that Tech may beat out North Dakota in the standings? Ah no... But interesting nonetheless. CC is clearly way out in front in this category. North Dakota, Duluth, and Wisconsin have some huge off season losses to make up.

I was wondering what happened to the Bulldog hockey fan website, its been down for a week or so. Looks like we have a rodent infestation problem!

Funny that the site is actually sponsored by a GPL guy, oh well.

Rodents will be infecting all of college hockey this year. For some reason ik am optimistic again. Looking for a 3rd place finish.

Pretty telling of the times when a diehard rodent fan is "optimistic" about next year for his team and predicts a 3rd place finish. Since when did optimistic about your team mean finishing less than a winner? You are sounding more like a reasonable or hopeful Beaver/Husky fan than a "once the top of the world" rodent fan.

I no longer have the blind optimism. Im shooting for 3rd and that is more of a goal then a prediction. O how I have fallen.

Maybe I should be cheering for a last place finish just to get Lucia out of here.

I am confident this team can get it done. I do still require the firing of Potulny and the hiring of Scott Bell in his place.

Ok I will step up, the gophers shock everyone and win the WCHA regular season and playoffs on their way to a 6th NCAA title. They follow that up with a historic run of 4 more national titles to take their rightful place on top of the college hockey world with 10NC's.

Too much?

Perfect,

Bear dont they already have 10 when you count all the national titles they have.

Im gonna see if I can find out who has the most. I know michigan does. But werent there a bunch of years prior that arent counted or something.

I think if you guys could swing the next 2 back to back, that would be a mighty fine way to exit the WCHA. Would pass Bucky and tie ND and DU. And would be a heckuva way to start your BTHC recruiting effort.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
