Team 4 Tomboys

Recommended Posts

Thats great Featherslayer. Now we've got a little pressure on the other teams. My story is now posted in the submissions post. The 4 other birds I've shot over the years have always been in front of me and came into the decoys. I sit in the same spot every year I'm draw.It was cool to know I could call one in since that bird never saw the decoys until the end. My 2 buddys are still down there now and it sounds like its going to be really tough with a foot of snow and strong winds. I hope the weather improves for ALL the hunters out yet this week. Good Hunting to all...DrJ

sounds good derek5, i believe thier is still 4 team members left to hunt. if my calculations are right we are in the no.1 spot so far so go get him. had a buddy call me this morning and had a bunch of questions on turkey hunting, ended up coming over and getting 2 hen decoys and my slate call. showed him how to use it and when and a few senorios if one would come in. low and behold he called an hour later and said his nephew just shot one, this was today and the time was around 2pm. i'm glad i could help them out, they showed up just to show me the bird it made my day especialy to see the young boy all fired up. here is the happy hunterfull-31865-8249-20110430_7.jpgthe spurs were 3/4" and the beard was 9.5"

I let PF JR take a day off school last Friday and we had birds responding to the call but couldn't get them to come in. Then the weather turned bad on Saturday and on Sunday the wind was 30-40 MPH and even though we found a spot sheltered from the wind we didn't see or hear a bird.

Nice work nc! Been out twice, had 3 jakes in the dekes on sun, and today had a longbeard hang up at 60yds. On the way home I spotted.a strutter on land I had permission for so my brother and I started our muddy stalk. He joined up with a hen, and she took.him away. But another gobble sounded off to the north. They started gobbling at each other like crazy! What happened next was sweet, they eyed each other at about 150 yds and the one closer to us took off after the contender. They met in the middle of the field and circled each other for a bit and the fight began! Feathers and spurs were a flying at each other. After 3 or 4 min of whacking each other the one that lost came towards us. I didnt have much cover on my left side and off course he came right at me on the left. He closed in fast to within 10yds without giving me a chance to pull back. He spotted me and began his warning putts. Its now or never, pulled back and he took off to my right, tried to lead him and released..... Clean miss! My bow hit a branch when I was swinging on him. By far the funnest turkey hunt ive been on. To see those 3 longbeards was a good sign. Its gonna be a long day at work! Next time I reply hoping to show a nice pic! Trying again tomorrow morn. Might bring the shotgun!

Well it finally happened! After working our tails off, I scored on a tom. Lastnight we set up in a field that they were using before they roosted. Had 3 long beards and 1 hen come in to the field. After they ate for awile they moved into the woods, it didnt look good. Tried some yelps followed up with a gobble call. About five mins later to my left at 20yds 2 toms stared down the strutting jake we had in place. Didnt take them long to destroy my brothers decoy! We had a quick laugh, then settled in on one. At 20yds all the hard work payed off. 7.5" beard 7/8" spur 17lb. Not a monster but still a solid bird. Ill try to post some pics later and fill out the score sheet.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
