Garmin GPS

Question

I recently received a Garmin GPS for X-mas and have a few questions I am hoping someone can answer for me.

While zooming in; I can get so far where I can see major interstates and highways, but am wondering with this unit if it's possible to zoom into more detail; such as on a lake to mark spots. I can see the lakes, but I was assuming that I could zoom in a lot closer to see more detail on the lake. Am I wrong in thinking this??

Thanks!

Did you get the eMap Deluxe which contains an additional memory card? If not, good idea to get one. To get the detail you want, you need to buy the U.S. Roads and Recreation software from Mapsource. The detail is great with this software. You will see what restaurant, gas station, points of interest (etc.) is at the next exit. Also with the lakes, you will see named islands, markers and public accesses. I use mine all the time on lakes which references your waypoints to the shape and features of the lake. The software downloads the info to your eMap from a PC (need cable). Garmin also updates the system software as does Mapsource. Check the Garmin website out for all the accessories and information available. I've had mine since they came out and have really enjoyed it. Possibly look at eBay for someone who might be selling the software or you might have to shell out ~$80-$90 (still worth it to me). Good luck and enjoy the new toy!

I also own an EMap, Rmrakt is definetly right when reccomending the accesories, I couldn't imagine using my GPS without them. Although the software seems spendy at first it pays off in the long run.

RM,

Thanks for the information, makes a lot more sense to me! Another question for you, after you bought the cd and downloaded it; do you need it anymore for any reason? Once it's on the GPS, why would one need it anymore? Or do you use it on your computer too?

Thanks!

You do need to keep the CD handy for the times you need to update the system software or when you want to change your saved mapset. Your eMap system is currently at 2.52. Garmin has improved the system to 2.73. Again, you need to go to their site to download. They also list what improvements they have had in each iteration. The same holds true with the Mapsource software. You can download only so much of the detailed map to your eMap (certain amount of counties) based on the size of the memory you install (I believe Deluxe comes with 8M?). You can save each set of maps/waypoints on your computer and retrieve as necessary (need CD here). The software on your computer is also great. Full color detail. I'm impressed with Garmin and the continous improvements they offer. This all sounds kind of busy here but it's very simple. Best thing to do is read the Garmin site info...Have fun!

Once you get familiar with using your GPS and MapSource check out a freeware program called USAPhotoMaps (available here: http://jdmcox.com/ ). This will allow you to overlay your waypoints and tracks over aerial photographs from Microsoft's Terraserver. It will also allow you to find the waypoint location for something interesting you notice on the aerial photographs.

Using the MapSource software I estimated the property corners of the section of land our deer hunting land is in. I uploded them to my GPS and set routes between the corners. Walking about the land the routes show up as property lines. Cool!

I then overlayed this (with USAPhotoMaps) atop the aerial photo which I was able to freely scroll about in. It was dead nuts on with a few fixed waypoints that were objects visbile in the photo.

In the aerial photograph I noticed an old logging road in a bog on the land. With USAPhotoMaps I then found various waypoints along that old road and downloaded them to my GPS. I was then able to walk through some horrible swamp and, lo and behold, we suddenly popped out on an old road. Some old timers in the area said they didn't think anyone had been back there for 20-30 years. I never would have known it was there, and I certainly wouldn't have easily found it without this technology.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
