I know it is a little early, and there is little to know ice yet.And I know it is up too mother nather to let us have the cold weather. What I want to know is when do the resorts start putting out there ice houses
out neer pine island.Does any one have a good idead when. The reason I am asking such a reall dum question,is that there will be 7 of us guys comming up when the ice is save and the houses are just put out there.so we could get into the big eyes and perch. and information will be reall nice

Last year they put the houses out around the second week in Dec. What week you going up?

They get them out as soon as possible. Last year was pretty early and they were moving them during that first week big time. I made my first trip across by vehicle [f150] on Dec. 7, there were a couple hundred out already by then! Hope for cold!
fiskyknut

Last year my first trip didn't occurr until Jan 2nd. By then we had 18-20" of ice and we were out to 28' of water. Hopefully this cold snap will stay with us and set up some good ice with little wind. I would call one of the resorts and book your party, if the ice wouldn't be safe they are not going to give you bad info and put you in danger. If you wait too long you might have a tough time coming up with accomadations. I'm going to keep watching this site and when Fisky makes that first run we'll know life is good once again. LOL bill

Ha Ha, I'll let you know when I make her. There are always a few braver folks that make it a day or 3 before me though that's for sure!
Should'nt be to long before I start walking out to a few choice locations to wet a line with the weather forecast we're seeing now. We better not see another lame warmup as we did after that blast of cold we saw before deer season. That would not be nice.
Patience, we're fisherman anyways, and it's Minnesota so we know it's gonna happen sooner or later....Yuk Yuk!
fiskyknut
I think after last years early kickoff we're all a bit froggy! I know you guys don't want me to speak of years past that were kind of 'late'!!!

[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 11-20-2003).]

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
