Shore Fishing Superior by Lutsen

Recommended Posts

A while back I was wondering about getting on Superior from up north by Lutsen in late Feb. while I'm at a bachelor party up there.

If I am heading north I have to do at least some fishing mixed in with everything else wink

depending on how much ice is moving in and out around shore do you guys think i'd have a decent shot at some loopers or other species? or would I be better to try to hit an inland lake like Caribou or something else for wallys? i couldn't find any close stocked stream trouts near lutsen when i researched it....

my only experiences shore fishing superior have been later in the spring around 2 harbors down to the french and such with my son a few years ago. what a blast! Just not sure if feburary has much going on? Thanks all!

I'm not sure this time of year you will find anything but Loopers off shore and not past Two Harbors? confused

I am sure the rainbows will be cruising within casting distance. I dont fish for them from shore but I know guys who do all winter. They are pretty secretive about the methods used to catch them though.

I'm pretty sure I'd have a shot at catching one if there were some cruisers. I did ok late April a couple years ago. I was quite a bit further south though, staging aroung the tribs, so who knows.

PointSetter- these guys u know fish them this far north?

Now I'm starting to itch for a few cast and retrieves, hahaha. Funny how the different seasons of fishing can get you so excited!

I'll probably bring ice gear and shore fishing gear. I'll also probably be having alot of fun with alot of friends who i don't see too often, but there are 3 of us who like fishing and cigars, so sounds like fun to walk down to the Big Pond with a stogey smile

i would cast cleo's and crocodile spoons since they have good action and weight to get out there. if you have a 7 foot spinning rod and 6 lb test you should be able to whip them spoons a good distance. i try to keep the lure up so i dont get hung up on the rocks. like you said, stay around the river mouths, and if they are active you should nail one. have a great time up there. good luck.

The secret might be that we don't fish from shore this time of the year. When you realize that you have to stand in the water because of the ice on the rocks and that you might be casting into floating ice chunks it really takes the fun out of it. Did I mention just how much ice builds up on your guides ?

There are times in April that we can't fish for the reasons I mentioned let alone right now when we know it will be horse dung.

Not trying to stop you but give a few hints on why no comments wink

Thanks Jim, just trying to give Far-1 some info, from the guys that live up that way. I fish the shore during spring and fall but you will not see me out there now as well. wink

Thanks for looking out....never hurts to ask you know?

I am going to give her a shot either way...sounds like a good experience either way, as long as the ice chunks aren't too bad.

probably be busy on the slopes and at papa charlies too, a few of us have joked about all wearing turtle necks with smoking jackets and growing out mustaches for the weekend. i'm already fixin on my pavano 'stache anyways so wth? anyways, if any of u see a mustached gentleman knee deep in the big pond with waders under a smoking jacket feel free to stop and chat or just heckle some! smile

If you have a set of ice creepers I much prefer staying on the rocks to useing the waders mid-winter. And day in day out, floating ice usually isn't much of an issue, especially the further north you go. It is a slow time of year, of course...

my brother told me that they were catching or seeing trout within the new macquade landing. he also told me that the dnr may have closed that area off to fishing. anyone know what the current situation is there. good luck.

There were 4 houses set up in the harbor on thursday or friday. I don't know why they'd close it...it's a looper fishery and they're a put and take fish all the way.

If it's not heavy surf and <0 you can cast out and bottom fish with night crawlers. This can be productive and ice won't be that big of a problem. One thing that could be is -0 temps. Basically it's a lindy rig type set up, with a 'slinky' for a weight (hockey shoelace filled with lead shot - melt the ends and put a small clip swivel). Then put a 2-3 ft leader and use a syringe to pump your crawler with air to keep it up off the bottom. It works great. You can catch trout and or salmon. 1 rod within 100 yards of the river mouth, otherwise you can use two. If it's a nice (sunny and calm) day it can be wonderful. You'll never know if you don't try!

Roulo

Good luck. Holiday staion at the end of 35 in duluth has good crawlers for sale.

They passed a rule that gives them the authority to temporarily close the harbor when needed, such as when they stock all the little loopers in spring and summer and the tourists and some other ne'er-do-wells tend to ignorantly take the under-sized fish when they're first schooled up in the harbor. Not a permanent closure, just when needed for fisheries stuff. Had a long talk with the fisheries manager when that came up last year. Made good sense when I heard all the info about it.

That makes good sense, of course. I would imagine they would handle that with signs posted temporarily as needed.
