Hello to all.. Newbie here. Love this site. Lurked forever. Lurking no more. I am heading to Battle Lake this weekend with my 8 yr old son and was hoping for some panfish action. Any lakes that are accessible by 4 wheel drive that he might find some crappies/sunnies. Any help would be great. I will post Sunday and let you know if we found any. Thanks for any replies...

Not trying to scary you off but if your looking for Pan fish i wouldn't go to Battle, very few and far between, Sun fish if you do find the they tend to run on the small side, crappies when i have been able to find them its a short window, and the best spot to go for them no one can get to becasue of slush, Lots of refrozen slush to watch out for out there, I got my Super duty Buried to weekends ago trying to save some friends that had a fish house out in the middle I broke thru and thought I was going down for a split second, Glad I roll with to trucks and a V plow out on the ice. I would look at the smaller lakes around for panfish but how travle is on smaller lakes I have no idea did look at a small lake by Underwood, but you couldn't pay me enough to drive out there 10inchs of ice with 4 inches of water with a nother 4 inches of ice then a bunch of snow. Hope this helps

I just came off battle. Travel is tough, but it did have the best travel out of any lake that I've seen in the area. As Grand Dad said, I couldn't get to where I wanted to go. Settled for a very secondary spot and didn't have much luck. couple pike and couple bluegills.

You can always try Stuart, which is east of BL. I don't know about travel conditions but it is a quiet and somewhat protected lake. Also, don't forget to have some broasted chicken for dinner at the "Purple Palace" (Vining Palace). The waitress's attitude may not be much to brag about, but the food sure is!

Thank you. We are actually staying at "The Lodge" on Ottertail. This is our fourth year. Great couple who run it. Usually its a bunch of guys drinking and playing poker with not a lot of fishing. This year it is just my Brother, so we each are bringing the youngest and thought we would actually fish. Thanks again. I will let you know how we do.

I was in ottertail county last weekend... if the only reason your going up there is to fish I would not bother leaving the cities unless your bringing a sled. driving conditions are awfull. the metro has tons of great pan fish spots. not trying to deter you from going up to that area I love to fish it to, but lake conditions really stink!

Tried Battle. Couple crappies out from the landing. Also went to a smaller lake (cant remember the name) and had fun with tip ups and a bunch of smaller sunfish. All in all a fun weekend with the boy.He caught fish and was happy. That's all I was after. Thanks for the earlier responses. Be back up in late Feb.

It's Really what fishing is all about...... Teaching our kids the joy of being outdoors and not sitting in front of the TV.. To all who take there kids fishing , please be proud of yourselves as there are many who don't and some who cannot.
