Planning a fishing trip this summer to the north shore. Prior to this year our group has fished out of Door County Wis. but are looking for a new venue. Only have fished Superior twice.

Question is location. Is there a better area to fish in the middle of July? Maybe there is no difference?

Appreciate any info.

You could always wait until you start hearing reports but my guess is most of the reports will come out of Duluth because that is where most of the charters run out of.

If your using your own boat, stay flexible.

You never know what the water temps will be or how long the salmon will stick around. Last year was a freak with all the Salmon on this end. Normally that time of year Lake Trout are the meat & potatoes around Duluth, it just a matter of depth.

If you have both a MN. and Wi. license you can fish walleye on the South Shore early and late and lakers on the Duluth side mid day. Keep a eye out here and those of us who fish out there regular will keep everyone up to date.

Thanks for the info.

So the way it looks that time of the year mostly Lakers.

Kings that time of the year deeper I assume?

Thanks again..

Even if the Kings were around at that time there is no comparison to Door County.

I dont want to scare you but I wouldn't give up a Door County trip to fish Superior in July especially out of Duluth. USUALLY thats when the lakers start going deep and the salmon have started moving towards Silver Bay and farther up. There are plenty of fish to catch around the area but it will take you awhile to get dialed in. If the water temps are normal you might want to try the Silver Bay area to get a nice mixed bag. A decent day out of Duluth in July for me seems to be about 6 to 9 lakers on average. Last summer my boat was slipped up the North Shore (Silver Bay) and I had multiple trips with 20 plus fish boated.

With all that said I am moving my boat to Duluth this summer and I am not sure why?

Thank you pointsetter,

That's what I was wondering if at time, Mid summer it would be better to go farther up the "north shore" and find cooler water. We've been leaning towards Silver Bay/Grand Marias area. Just wanted to get some more info on that.

I'm well aware of the differances in the two lakes for Salmon/Trout. We've been very happy with our trips out east. Our group is just looking for a new challenge and learning opportunity closer to home.

Again thanks for the help!

If you plan on using a charter and/or plan on going to Silver Bay, a buddy of mine has a charter our of the Silver Bay Marina called Laker Taker Charters [Note from admin: Your post has been edited. Please read forum policy before posting again. Thank you.]. Plus theres a Salmon contest we do every year called Lake Superior Salmon Classic. Lots of good prizes and usually a good time had by all! Either way good luck fishing!!

Although I've never tried it, is there any walleye fishing to be had on the MN side of Lake Superior or is it all done on the Wi. side?

TJ There is some walleye action on the Mn side but its close to the Duluth/Superior entrys,,,, the further up the shore ya go the less chance of any eyes ,,,at least thats been my experience ,,,,I fished LS 32 times last season and seldom fished the Mn side

I'm sure it's not comparable to the river but is the SS walleye fishing good enough to justify purchase of a Wi licence?

I've picked up a few over the years at the border out the Superior entry trolling lakers but no real numbers of them

The only reason why I have a Wi. License is to fish walleyes out there. That should tel you something.

trying tp predict where the fish will be in july is like trying to predict where the fish will be in july, ha ha. lake superior is so different hour to hour let alone month to month or year to year.

yes typically the warmer water will have pushed the salmon deeper and further north up the shore, but since the minnesota dnr has not stocked salmon in lake superior for so long your best bet is to start all the way up in the north east corner and fish your way west.

The thunder bay area has been and still is stocking king salmon in lake superior and have been pretty successfull. the thunder bay area warms faster and hold salmon earlier in the year (actually all year) and when there is a strong ne wind for a few days it will blow that warmer water (salmon water 45 deg. to 55 deg.) west to grand marais and some good fishing between grand marais and the canadian border can be had.

Between mainland and isle royal can be very good for salmon too
