KEYC - The LeSueur County Sheriff's Department is investigating a string of fish house break-ins on West Lake Jefferson.Authorities say someone used a crow-bar to break into several houses on the lake...stealing tackle, fishing rods and a flat screen tv.The sheriff's department is stepping up patrols but they're asking the public for help as well.Deputy Brett Mason says, ''The public sometimes is our best eyes and ears. What we want the public to do is anytime they see something suspicious I want them to call their local sheriff's office and tell us what's going on so we can possibly prevent some of the activity that has been occurring.Deputies says it's also important to keep track of the serial numbers on your more expensive items so that they if they are stolen and recovered it's easier for them to know who they belong to.

Man, would love to catch one of these guys in the act. Hard to believe nobody is out on the lake other than these theifs, in a permanent nearby hearing them. I'm guessing they go out on foot?

They got my house last year, so I have a surprise for them this time.

Well, We all have to watch out for each other and hopefully we can catch these needy crooks. they must be needy right? they needed my stuff

If people wouldnt leave there stuff on the lake, there would be no reason to breakin to houses... foolish

I work to hard for my money to not respect my equiptment and leave it on the lake.

So it's my fault I left a few things in the house?? Its not like I left a TV Generator, etc.

The people who need to respect things are the idiots breakin in!

Let's say there is a thunderstorm. You know lightning is striking all over the place because you can hear the thunder and you heard on the news and read on HSO about all the people that are getting hit with it. Despite knowing about the danger, you decide that you should hold a big metal pole up in the air. Well, a big bolt comes down and hits your pole, killing you instantly. The lightning killed you, it's guilty of that without a doubt. But you can't control where lightning hits and despite knowing the dangers you decided to hold a big metal pole up in the air. You are partially responsible for the end result because if you would have taken simple precautions it wouldn't have happened.

????

simple precautions? like..leaving a note on the door for someone who is too stupid to read, saying please don't break in, I took everything home?

Or are you saying leaving a fish house unattended over-night is fair game to the low lifes?

Or are you saying leaving a fish house unattended over-night is fair game to the low lifes?

I hope that you are not so dense that you deduced from my post, but just in case I'll explain further:

I'm saying an unattended fish house left overnight WILL get broken into sooner or later and if there is anything of value inside it WILL get taken. Outside of not leaving your house out there, the only thing you can do is remove anything of value and hope that the vandalism isn't too bad and the would-be thieves don't burn it to the ground.

I would take anything of value out of there evertytime I leave. Anyone who has any sense at all would have their permanent ice house insured along with any expensive equipment. I would still take out the expensive stuff though.

on both the perms we use, we leave the door unlocked and house empty...... whats the point in risking all your stuff....

Unlocked and empty is the way to go. I little more work bringing all your stuff out every time but well worth it.

Im not saying its your fault or it justifiable. cause you leave your stuff , evan left empty it would still tick me off if somebody vandalized my shack cause the door was locked. they have no clue theres nothing in it. what the point in leaving it / pure laziness? why risk it

Three things are certain about ice fishing season:

1) people litter on the lake

2) people steal from fishhouses

3) people complain about littering and stealing

I don't have a permanent, but know enough that if I did, I would not leave a flat screen, fishfinder, stereo, tackle, rods, or anything else of value unattended. There are always going to be low-life theives - all you can do is protect yourself from them by being smarter. If it was me, I would not be able to sleep knowing my valuables were unattended on a lake.

same here! just no reason why should you . if it where up to me the perms would evan stay over night unless occupied.

cannot post a simple heads up or warning of vandals anymore without someone rippn the house owner apart. yes, we understand there are low lives around doing that stuff. we are just trying to look out for others and find THEIR belongings. "someone" always has something smart to say about it. sorry we own perms, sorry i blew up guy.

wasn't implying anything buy my last post. if you prefer to alert people and don't want any replies good or bad I can lock the thread if you prefer.

I was simply stating what was obvious, as is should of been before you left your gear in your shack.

I would feel no differant if you left your wife's purse or your billfold in the car at night with hundred or evan thousands cash in it and locked it up. why would you do it ? would you feel sorry for the guy who did it?

or feel the need to warn the media for it ........duhhhhhhhhhhrrrrr !

Sorry somebodys gonna comment about it.... human nature.

You are correct Sir - It happens ever single year, and probably every single month.

I am not saying anyone is wrong for posting a warning here nor implying anything else. All I am saying is it happens.

I would love to have a wheel house and the only thing keeping me from it is fact that I know if I leave on the lake overnight someone will break in to it. If there is nothing to steal they will often destroy it locked or unlocked. It is too bad but that is the way it is.

While the portable is a bit of work I think it is often easier than hauling a wheel house on and off the lake everyday. I can't imagine the frustration of having someone break in and steal from your house or destroy it.

As far as a surprise waiting for a would be thief this too has been discussed. Please keep your 'surprises' legal less you suffer more from someones crime.

I have no issues with anyone leaving a house on the lake but I do believe those who do are in for a really bad day sooner or later.

suprise? how about a bear trap under a rug. then leave a lighter so they can light the furnace and a cell phone for emergency calls only this way they he will have your fish house warm for either you should he not call 911 or the authorities should he go that route. grin

I don't know what you imply by surprise, but you might be surprised at who is liable if someone injures themself in your shack, even if they are the criminal breaking in.

I stated they "needed my stuff" I didn't have anything of alot of value in the house, I also, work too hard to just give it away. They just took the "fun" out of it and wrecked the door doing so.

As for the the "surprise" thanks all for the concern, but I wouldn't do anything illegal or harm the poor crooks, I'm above that. Lets say if our house is hit again, I'll SHOW you who did it. -Mike

I'm not sure if that was a poke at me or not but whatever I may have asked for it. my dads house got the door torn off it before , I used to have a perm and didnt leave a thing in it when i left for the day, but it still peeved me off when the folded my aluminum $250.00 door in half to enter just to look for them selfs. never had another problem after that when I left the door open . what s the worst that could happen leaving it unlocked? what ever it is im sure it beats damaging the door or windows to gain access. It sucks we live in a society where people destroy or steal another persons property. nothing we can do but don't allow ourself to be a victim.

I have noticed people's houses doors open before... and I thought I was being a nice guy going over to their houses and closing the door for them.... maybe I shouldnt do that anymore?

Personally I would lock it if its a newer house. A majority of the newer ice castles will take quite a bit of doing to get into. A buddy of mine bought a new ice castle this year and had them put a dead bolt on the door along with outside shutters that lock. He is pretty paranoid but I can understand the reasoning behind it. He doesnt leave much in it besides rods and some tackle but it would be quite the headache to come out on a Saturday to do an overnighter ice fishing with buddies and come out to see your house has been broken into.

There are pros and cons to everything. No sense in argueing over it. People see ice houses and think its easy pickings. They will either find something of value or get ticked off because its empty and feel they need to break something.

Now lets all get along and agree to disagree and enjoy the season! smile

I am not sure if homeowners would cover a ice house. For those who have a real expensive house I would imagine you can get insurance but would you be able to file a break in claim if the door is left unlocked ?

As far as what damage can be done if the door is open many of these super rats like to squirrel away copper. Such as wiring heaters any shiny metal object will do and they will tear your walls out to se if there is any. In past posted break ins it was mentioned that many think it is real funny to use the open house as a rest room.

Not jabbing you but you would be amazed how low 'people' can go if they think no one is watching.

The last few years I have just started bringing my house home with me if I am not going to be in it for awhile. It is a pain, but it is a sure way to make sure you still have your stuff or don't get your door ripped off or heater torn out.

It is [PoorWordUsage] though that we should have to worry about it so much every year. This area seems worse than most. It is a good thing people post warnings about it happening so we can be on the lookout, so I don't see why people are knocking them telling them to take stuff out etc. They know that, it is more just a heads up.

As far as outlawing keeping fishhouses overnite, get real dude.

I would like them to change the 10ft. from fishhouse rule too, but I know it ain't gonna happen.

My 2 cousins and myself just finished up a windy 4 day trip to our favorite lake. It was the last of the year and was eventful to say the least. When we arrived, water temperatures were 61 degrees and when we left yesterday morning the water temps had dropped to 54 degrees. The fishing was fantastic, once again, and we caught walleyes, bass, and northerns on minnows and crawlers(northerns only on minnows). We found the fish adjacent to shallow rock piles(14') in 20'-28' of water. Our best fishing hours of the day were ~5:30 -twilight in the evenings and until ~ 10:30 in the mornings. Although those two time periods were prime time, fish bit all day. For us, the bite was very light and we probably missed or lost as many fish as we caught. Some people think I'm nuts when I say bead color can make a difference and it certainly did this trip. My cousin's "go to" green/white bead combo did zilch on this trip. It was one translucent red bead and a plain size #2 gamakatsu hook with a 3' leader that produced the fish. We ended up with 137 walleyes and 19 bass for the 4 day outing. We caught far more 17"-19.999" walleyes on this trip than on our previous trips and our numerous slot fish measured from 21"-25". My younger cousin caught 4 slot fish in ~20 minutes one evening. We fish exclusively for walleyes and additional species are incidental. With that said, we caught some beautiful smallmouth bass on this trip and they were right down there with the walleyes, usually in the rocks. As usual, everything is catch and release except for the fish we eat while there and the 12 walleyes(3 individual limits) we take home to the wives. While cleaning some eaters we kept for supper, we always check the stomach contents. One of the walleyes had the jig that is pictured below loose in its stomach!  No attached line, no embedded hook, just the jig! It baffled us as to how in the world it could have gotten there . As you can see, the jig is in good shape so the fish must have swallowed it recently .   The boat traffic was minimal this trip and we had a couple days where it looked as if we had the lake to ourselves. Sunday was a brutal day with wind gusts to 50MPH!. We stayed in and ventured out finally at ~5:00. It turned out to be the best 2 hours of the entire trip. This time, the baby loons were around, the eagles were abundant, the changing leaves made the entire lake area look like a painting. If I could make only one short trip a year to the lake, now would be the time. What capped off the trip was the magnificent display of the Northern Lights. We can't wait for next spring to return, God willing, and, in the meantime, good fishing.  MarkB🙂 The jig found in the stomach of a walleye we ate.   My young cousin with his best of the trip.   a chunky 17" smallmouth   19.5" smallmouth

What an amazing extended weekend. The fish were happy and cooperated nicely.   We also had the unique experience of fishing under Northern Lights each of the last three nights in pristine weather conditions.  I wish everyone could have that experience, even if just once.  The pics below don't do it justice, though you get the idea.  The walleyes are putting on the feedbag and some are getting rather plump.  We caught mostly slot fish with several 'overs' in our bag.  Our two biggest weighed 8lbs 5oz and 8lb 3oz.     The crappies were active at dusk and beyond.  Almost all of the ones we caught were 14" or bigger.  The biggest we caught was a bit over 15".  We lost two muskies at the boat and caught a 38" pike after dark - quite surprising.   Every fish we caught was immediately released btw.  Water temp 54/55 when we left.  All-in-all, another great fishing experience on Lake Vermilion - for which I'm so incredibly appreciative.
