Aitkin Lake?

Recommended Posts

Anyone fished Aitkin Lake lately? Heading there this weekend with a few buddies. Wondering how to get there during winter also?

Do you run sleds out of the Big Sandy Rec/Dam area that's South of Aitkin Lake?

thanks folks!

Its connected to Big Sandy Lake, via the Aitkin Lake Flowage.

From MN Lake finder......

"This natural channel from Big Sandy (~2 miles long and varying in width) is navigable, but can be quite narrow at times, especially in years of high wild rice production. Water level in Aitkin Lake is controlled at the Corps of Engineers dam on the Sandy River. Open water access to Aitkin Lake is either from Big Sandy Lake or Aitkin Lake Resort, which is the only major development on the lake. In winter, some anglers also access the lake via state lands on the east and west sides of the lake. With the exception of some parcels in the southwest end and north side of the lake, most of the shoreline is in state ownership."

It also lists a public access, I'm pretty sure I've seen while on my ATV. I just dont remember how I got there. wink

There is a trail...non improved but it may be tree blocked as it was earlier but someone may have cut them out.

Other than that you'll have to sled in on the river....watch out for slush pockets.

thanks guys. We parked at Big Sandy Rec area (nice folks running it) and sledded in via river/channel. Marked ALOT of fish, could only get a few to bite.

BigBartguy, were you up there and staying at Tim's cabin? If so, I was in the group staying at his neighbors two down. We had some luck Thrs on Aitkin, caught some tullies on BSL, a few pike and tiny walleye on Round, and a few smaller pike on Minnewawa. That's sums up our weekend up there.

LOL. I AM Tim. What's up Aaron?

fyi - we've got an ice dam and water coming in 1 of our walls up there. Going back up on Saturday with my brother-in-law Guy and going to clear off roof and (hopefully) get rid of the dams. Make sure and get the snow off of your roof! We havent cleared our roof once yet - lesson learned.

This isn't Aaron, I am one of his buddies that he introduced you to. That's funny!! Hopefully the fish are biting better this weekend, I believe Aaron is heading back up.
