iowally,<P>i think gibbons is probably the best place to stay on the lake, i have been goin there with my dad and his friends for 5 or 6 years now, they have huge houses and all the houses have stoves bunks and everything else u would need, jason is the guy that runs it now and he is a very nice guy and he moves the houses quite often in order to keep u on fish, he normally has the houses all by themselves so u dont have to worry about crowds, he checks up on you a few times a day. I defenatly recomend gibbons.

Thanks to everyone for your reply, We're looking foward to this trip we go every year together and this is the farthest we will travel. By the way it is 13 hours for us to drive one way, but when there 16 you don't get to enjoy this as much. Down here in IA all we have is Excellant Pheasant Hunting. Once again thanks for all the info and maybe we'll see you up there......

All I can tell you, is "GO" !!!!!<BR> My youngest is 17, and heavy into girls and football. Take your son fishing today, you will remember it forever, whether the fish bite or not. And even if you don't get a bite, which is unlikely on LOW, it will always be a "good" memory. Too many fathers would love to get that opportunity back, and can't. So, take it from a fellow "Dad" "Just do it", you will always remember it!!"<P>Who can put a price on that?<P>Enjoy!!

Luckly we only live about 3 hours away from the Big Pond. I have been bringing my kids there every year for the last 5 years and wish I could relive everyone of those trips. Last March my (then) 8 year old son caught a 8 1/2 lbs. Walleye while fishing in one of Gibbins houses grin.gif.<P>Good Luck and please let us know how you did. I think you will love Gibbins houses.<P>BTW - I took them Pheasant hunting this year but it had to be on a game farm smile.gif.

What kind of numbers can you catch in those sleepers? At Gibbons

I dont know about you guys, but whenever we go to LOW it seems like the walleyes will not bite at dark. Its like somebody flips a switch when day break comes and the walleye bite continues hot all through the day until it gets dark and then it slows down....maybe Im wrong though?<BR>JHansel

WhaTT, <BR> <BR>last year when we were up in mid feb me and 4 other people caught i think 75 walleyes and saugers and 20 perch or so, that was only one day, we did just as good the next day. We also had a huge northern or musky on, when the 8 year old set the hook the rod broke into 3 pieces, we had to hold the rod together untill it got up to the hole and bolted and broke the line, when i looked down the hole all i saw was a head, it took up the whole hole. any other stories?

JHansel7 is right. The fish seldom bite once the sun goes down (with the exception of the pout). I do catch more fish out of the sleepers though because I am a slow mover in the morning and I am there for the prime times - dawn and dusk. If I am staying in a cabin or motel I have to pack my stuff up in the morning and evening and haul it back and forth. In a sleeper I just haul it out and back one time. When I role out of the bunk in the morning I can drop a line in b4 I even go to the can. And the line stays in until it is pitch black out. If I am staying in a cabin, I have to pull up my lines when the Bomber gets there and that is all there is to it. There have been times when that is right when the big girls move in and start to bite. I figure I get about 4 more hours of fishing each day by staying in a sleeper. Like I said - I am slow in the moring. <P>I also bring a portable and snowmachine sometimes so if fishing is real slow I can go look for them. I usually stay put though.<P>But everyone is different. I like the privacy of my own sleeper and I am lazy too grin.gif. To me it is a lot like camping (and I LOVE camping). It is work getting out there, but once I am there I can kick back and enjoy.<P>Sleepers are cheaper than cabins too. Not that it matters to me though - I'd do it even if they cost more.<P>BTW - Gibbins has marine band radios in the sleepers so you can hear how the other houses are doing or even scan the channels to hear the bomber drivers from the other resorts talking back and forth. There is nothing like having live updated fishing reports while you are fishing grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif.<p>[This message has been edited by Dr. Bob (edited 11-18-2003).]

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
