Blaine- The Ponds (or whatever they're called...)

Recommended Posts

A few years ago, the development across from Blaine HS dug a bunch of ponds on the west side of University AVE, I'm guessing between 25-35ft deep before they filled it with water.

Anyone know if they've stocked it? I don't know if that was part of the plan, but I can't figure any other reason for digging so deep.

Thanks!

I have heard of people catching panfish out of it. I have never attempted to fish there myself, but just what I heard in the past.

I wouldn't doubt that there are some decent sunnies or crappies in the ponds (in Blaine)because I know of a few ponds in housing developments in Andover and Coon Rapids that definitely have some decent sized pannies in them. These ones are also about 30' deep depending on water levels because the one's I know of are just drainages with no outflow or regulation.

I wouldn't eat a thing out of the one's I know of, but there are some nice one's that wouldn't be kept anyway.

They might be that deep to allow for sediment buildup over time.

I'd have to agree with you. I'm sure the ponds I know of are designed to take the runoff from the streets and all the sand, salt, and other nasty debris that comes with it.

I forgot to mention in the previous post that local kids stocked the ponds I know of when the developments were new about 10-15 years ago and the city and state had no plans for stocking.

These ponds have aerators in them during the summer. I don't see any open ice during the winter. I highly doubt there are any fish in there. Although I could be totally wrong. I know it's a spot where the ducks come to quite often when the ice thaws.

Besides that, be careful if you do decide to go on there,,,,for the ice may be questionable.

Those ponds have not been stocked as far as I know. I have never seen (nor heard) of anyone catching anything and I have actually only once seen anyone even down on the ice (I drive by these every day) and it looked like a group of the HS kids maybe for a science project or something. The ponds are mainly designed (as someone else suggested)to catch runoff and I think they were dug deeper so they wouldnt dry up in the summer. Those ponds had big sprinklers put in that spray water up in the summer time and the new development that is going in on that side is called "The Fountains". Aesthetics (and function) for the neighborhood is about all these are...

I drive by them on my way to work as well, but pass by them in the dark and didn't pay attention to the sign until a few days ago. I have no intention of getting on the ice, but I was thinking it may be a nice place to catch a few before work once it warmed up as I've heard that some of the other development ponds in the area have been stocked with pannies and bass.

Just trying to figure out how to pass an hour or so before work; they're set to cancel OT soon and sitting in the lunchroom gets kind of old.
