Cold Temps, but Hot Bite!

Recommended Posts

With cold temps that are bone chilling, some anglers might just stay in until warmer weather; but the conditions were right for good fishing. Travis was telling me that he did well last night and wanted to hook up this afternoon. So, after work I hooked up with him to get on sunfish and crappies. All I could think about is to get setup quickly and get in the house.

We started around 2:30pm and fished until 6:30pm, which we landed 35 sunfish and 25 crappies. They were very active today for Travis until he told me that I needed a very small fiskus jig. The color also needed to be black, so I switched and there I went!

We were fishing today in 20FOW and pulling them off the bottom. The bottom a soft muddy flat and produced nice gills until 5:00, then the crappies came in. Most crappies were in the 7-10 inch range, but I managed to get a nice 11.5".

It was a great day fishing with Travis today, even thou the temps were cold. Here's Travis with a 8.5" sunfish.

Remember that when the barometer is moving during these weather systems they will produce a great bite like today. The bite will get even better as we head into February and March. Warmer temps and the sun staying up longer, and this is my favorite time to fish. We are able to do more hole hopping to stay on the schools of fish.

Good luck out there and stay warm.

Nice pics., and report sniffer. You are right on the bight being good when its cold, I have some of my best luck on the coldest days of the year. Just need to be extra careful with equipment because on the coldest days things like to break.
