I would like to hear from some outfitters/fishermen how far off the bottom to they usually fish for eyes with deadsticks? What do you usually tell your customers who ask? One post said 3"??

thanks,

This winter I'm hearing 2 to 3 inches off the bottom more and more. It could make sense. A layer of frozen slush covered with a lot of snow. It could be pretty dark down there.

i just got back from red and we were only getting fish from both jigging and dead sticking when we were within 3 inches or less from bottom.

I have been telling my customers 2 inches with a bobber set up. If just using the vex bounce it off the bottom or as the wife says off there head if she is marking one tight to the bottom

Agrressive pattern with stable weather I set 12" for solid hook ups. Low frontal and post frontal when its slow and the fish are biting soft I down size the hook/bait and set 4".

Lay a jigging spoon with a minnow head on the bottom and poof it a couple of times to stir up the mud. Let it sit for a while and then raise it a little bit off the bottom. If it doesn't hit the jigging spoon it will probably go over to the dead stick. The best luck we had this weekend was a plain red hook with a red bead on a dead stick and the smallest fathead we could find. Coldfront conditions lend themselves to smaller, compact presentations. Just my two cents worth.

I always go for six to eight inches on the deadstick and jig about eight inches to a foot off of the bottom. I have had the best luck with a 1/16 glow jig head/deadstick and the smallest rattle type spoon, buckshot, darter or lindy flyer while jigging. Last year a small glow demon was great this year it seemed to need a rattle so I didn't change it up much as every fish that came in hit. The water did seem really dark this year, so I stayed with the rattles.

A good all around dpth is six inches. With other factors drop to three or raise as high as 18. I have been talking to LOW fisherman and they are getting eyes four feet off the bottom. So I have gone higher with some luck and a better perch bite. Just remember the only thing constant is change and you should be also.
