Usually rent a house when coming up to the Big Lake, but this time, bringing my own house. Will I need to buy/bring an extension for my Strikemaster?

You should buy/bring and extention anytime you fish in a solid house.

It is getting close to needing one now.

I don't take my extenstion off anymore. Sure it stands a little higher for starting, but never have to worry about whether I should or shouldn't have it with me. As Curt mentioned with a perm up off the ice, its getting real close.

I was up there in a sleeper last weds. It was getting real close for needing an extension so I would suggest for you to bring it.

I have never understood the Auger Extension question. If someone tells you "NO", you absolutely don't need an extension...and you get up there to fish, and you DO need one....why would you not pack a small bar that takes up no room?

If it looks like it might rain, to ask if you need to bring an umbrella just doesn't make sense to me.

Simple, many folks don't own an extension. As for me, if I need to go pick one up I want to know if I actually need the thing. Between my place and LOW or URL there is no place to buy an extension. I don't fish much so probably will never own one. It is not the room for extinsion it is the inconvenience of having to track one down and buy it for one trip.

Inconvenience? These days you get it shipped to your door. Every extension for every model of auger can be bought online. Even if you don't fish much, buy one. It makes your auger stand out even more if you ever plan on selling it... accessories.

Sounds like you need to invest the $20 for an extension...or are you only going to fish in shallower ice...and I am not trying to be a dink....just pointing out that you are putting off a purchase that is a "must" if you own an auger.

I have never needed one, and I really don't see why everyone here has such a fit about the questions. Just answer them for they guys. It is a yes or now answer, then move on.

only thing is...that question in particular is kind of a running joke on the forums...if you own an auger, you should own an extension...no offense...i've been viewing this site for about 2 yrs. now...and that questions, right or wrong, will bring about some colorful responses...good times...

fish on!

How big should a guy's [auger]extension be? Ha!

Couldn't a guy with a little bit of metal and welding knowledge make an extension? I once fabricated an extension for a fence post gas powered auger that worked well. Made it with scraps of metal laying around.

What does an extension cost?

A lot less than if you figured out your supply cost and what you feel your free time is worth. But, if you enjoy that kind of thing, I say go for it. Personally, I took Shop 7 all three years of Jr. High. And not because I liked it. Yea on-line stores and next-day delivery.

Wow, wasn't expecting an innocent question to elicit some of the sarcastic responses. Honestly, it was just a basic question...I had no problem running down to Reed's to grab the extension, it was actually a nice reason to get out and grab some other gear as well.

Pinusbanksiana... Wow you must really live in the bush eh.. Good thing more often than not in the winter stores up here will have one or 2 for you. If not they've been sold out to those in need. Better to have and not need than need and not have and then have a fit or something.

Pinusbanksiana.. Odds are good though if you ask nice and folks are so prepared somewheres around you when and or if you don't make it thru the ice someone will help you get thru the ice so you can then fish.

Peace and out.

You may or may not need one on the open ice, depending on the year and where you fish.

However, you almost always need one if you fish from a perm. Distance from the floor to the ice is at least a foot before your blade bites ice. We need 'em now on Mille Lacs, at least where I fish.
