wheel house tips and fishing report

Recommended Posts

another busy weekend on the lake has me wanting to give some of you tips for bringing your wheel houses up to the lake.

first, come on up. we have a lot of options for you. we are opened to at least four different areas of the lake, coming out from HighBanks Resort.

we are willing to plow you an area to set up if you are patient, we have a lot to do but we will get to you asap.

second, with the extra snow we have on the ice, we still have been able to maintain a good road system.

with your cooperation we will be able to keep them open all winter.

DO NOT drill within 50 feet of any plowed road. water is coming out from holes up to 70 feet from where some one bores holes making it out to the road.

I don't want anyont to have a heart attack pulling a portable farther than they should so if you want to gett of farther than you can pull, flag down one of the plow drivers and ask for assistance.

here is how to set up your wheel house while keeping the water issues to a comfortable minimum.

bring blocking with you. four inches should be enough for a couple days set up.

then, bank your house, before you drill.

you will have some shavings in the house to deal with bit a shovel and broom will help clean that up pronto.

what happens is the water will come up and saturate the lower part of your banking and weep out a little ways from the house and freeze.

this bath tub effect keeps the water from spreading all over around you.

water under the snow stays in the form of slush for days making plowing in those areas a nightmare.

one more tip to keep flooding to a minimum is to use your flasher to check water depths. DO NOT drill to check depths.

we plowed a road for one group. I won't mention Buzz's name here #-o but checking depths up and down his fresh plowed driveway, resulting in the need for a completely new driveway off of the spot he desired.

he has learned.

avoid if you can, areas where portables have set up as there will likely be slush.

fishing this weekend continues to be on the slow side. fish are being caught, but not in the numbers we would like to see. the sizes range from eaters to nice picture fish like this one.

one fello just came in this morning reporting doing well for walleyes last night.

he said he was using a perch colored jigging RAPALA.

makes sense. on almost every set up we are seeing fish on the locator, but they come up and drift away.

we also see on the cameras TONS of tiny perch minnows.

northland now has a very good likeness of a perch on a jigging spoon.

I will experiment with these and see how we do.

yes, it's slow, but at least we can get out and fish. our willing ness to push on to new areas, keeps things hopeful that we will run into cooperative fish.

I am now on a search for pa good perch bite. they seemed to save the day last year when the walleyes slowed.

tulibees are VERY active right now and will keep you entertained.

they are great smoked so I will also set up a house fto catch a mess for my father in law to smoke.

they are fun to catch.

good fishing all and I hope to see you on the lake!

Thanks for all the help this weekend........Lessons learned. LOL Thanks for all the hard work this weekend. Ended up with 12 walleyes. Make sure you do what Jiggle says about the houses. It is seriously like a gyser out there if you drill a hole to check depths with no snow around.

I will modify this to say you should block 6 inches now instead of four inches of blocking.

we have had several houses that we have had to re-block in order to keep them dry.

still able to keep things dry around the houses by adhereing to these simple precautions.

thanks for your help.

Sounds like you have a real mess out on the lake right now. Snow, slush, cracks, ridges, flooding, etc. Hope that things get better for this next couple months as I have the itch for perching. Keep us informed.

that is not true at all.

come see for yourself.

in times like this it pays to be informed and it really helps to keep things in order by informing people on proper methods of set up in order to keep things dry.

you can fish in slush if you like but if you'd like to stay dry follow a few simple precautions.

cracks and slush are a natural order and we re route our roads when nessecary.

boring holes near or on a road just causes problems not only for us who are there working to keep things open and safe for all to enjoy, but for those who like to have a good ice fishing experience.
