Winter Carp?

Fisherman For a Lifetime

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

My wife wants me to catch some carp for her to pickle (yea, I got a good one, she cleans fish well too...)

Do carp bite on corn in the winter and if so, around where in the Bayport area & how deep should I fish for them...??

Thanks!

I would imagine there is a better place to catch em than the st croix in winter. And a better fish than carp for that matter.

carp in the summer are a hoot, not sure why they wouldn't be in the winter. to me it's all about something tugging on the end of that line and the harder it tugs the more fun it is. It's a lot easier to get that experience with a lowly carp than searching high and low for trophy walleye.

I don't eat carp myself, but they are enjoyed all over Asia where people like their fish to taste like fish rather than the bland stuff preferred by scandanavian descendants. 2c

If you choose not to fish them then that is your choice walleyes are not all the hoot people give them.

I wish we did not have to pay for messages but post up your email and I'll shoot you an email.

Winter Carp is one of the best smoked fish on the market. Most carp are caught with gill nets even through the ice. The nets are put out, then you drive in large circles pulling chaines and steel frives to drive the carp to the nets.

Tim, you could try fishing the twin lakes down by Centerville and check below the dam there as there may be a spearing opp if the fish have moved up by the dam. That would be a place worth checking out if you are looking for carp.

I've seen them caught all winter in the King Plant Outlet when it is warm water discharging. Just about everything runs up into that warm water, the carp are up there too. I've seen them caught on corn. Take your long rods and fish from the shore - remember you can fish two lines there.

You might like to try some of that GULP Carp bait too - I would think that would work up in the outlet. The current flow would distribute the scent and help them find your bait. You should be able to find some at Fleet Farm I would think.

Im not sure what your trying to say here. Surely you cant deny that there are many better tasting fish than carp. Unless your just downright ignorant. Also they are an invasive species after all, i could go on all day about how carp are destructive to many lakes. Ive caught many carp, unintentionally. Perhaps you could try the roughfish section of this website as thats what carp are. I never said you shouldnt target carp if thats your thing go for it, keep all of em and put them in your garden, but if your going for meat why not get some Walleye, Crappie, Sunnies, Perch?

Pound for pound carp will give you a better fight than most gamefish...besides a catfish. I have never caught them in the winter though.

A question on catching a specific fish was asked so why steer him away from catching his target?

The Croix is a great fishery in many species including some that are endangered. There are over 60 species known to be there. We are lucky to have more than just the normal game fish to target.
