Shiners vs fat heads

Recommended Posts

if your just using the minnow head on a jigging spoon or buckshot, i dont think it really matters. but if your using a single hook under a bobber, then minnow choice makes much more of a difference.

I usually pick up live shiners, this year haven't noticed much of a difference yet. Usually when your fishing the gap area early season it is a good idea IMO.

We have always used shiners, but seems like most of the resorts give their clients a bucket of fat heads...targeting eyes and sauger...last week i used fat heads while the others used shiners on our dead sticks and fat heads produced as well..sure this changes day to day but with the shortage fat heads are easy to get and use...

There are two main differences I've noticed between fatheads and shiners:

1) shiners are more expensive

2) shiners die much more easily

On a good day of fishing. Shouldnt make a difference either way.

On a bad day of fishing. It could make all the difference in the world.

Shiners are hard to find and come with a price nowadays.. but im always up to spending another $10-15 for the "just in case" scenario.

fatheads always work.. hence the reason the resorts give them to you.

You spend several hundred dollars to get there stay there and have a good time. A little extra money for bait should not be a hard decision.

that all depends on where you get your bait from.i use shiners till i cant get tham anymore then its fat heads have no problem keeping shiners alive or catching fish on either shiners or fatheads.
