I won't be able to get out till Monday.

I'm expecting to find ALOT of slush on the area trout lakes.

I'll still get after 'em though, but it will more than likely be on snowshoes.

Good Luck if you get out and check the ice!! Those deep trout lakes freeze up late and might not have as much ice as they normally do at this time of year.

Absolutely. Currently the plan is to join the crowd on one of the area stream trout lakes because I am too afraid of failure to go out for lakers. Good luck to everyone.

Yep- probably chase some lakers- hope there isn't too much slush. Some slush aint bad, been dealin with it for awhile, but ALOT of slush can ruin a good day in a hurry. Good Luck. Deet- when fishin lakers, everyday is good, just some days are better than others.

Deet,

Lakers are definitely frustrating. I've had WAY more days where I brought the skunk home, than days where fish were caught.

I've had quite a few 1 fish days and 2 years ago, it took me longer to walk to/from my spot and auger a couple of holes, then it did to catch 2 lakers.

I like a challenge, otherwise I would have given up on them a long time ago.

Caribou is my favorite to go to, although the trout run quite a bit smaller than the ones on Bluewater. Bluewater is my sworn nemisis and I have yet to ice a fish there. Maybe.......just maybe this winter will be my year? crazy

I appreciate the encouragement. I was being mostly facetious. Was actually considering making the trek to Caribou. I fished there once in the winter. Had three fish on but lost each one because I was using walleye gear (mono line, med-light rod). I have heard the fish run small, but I'd still like to get any old laker through the ice.

What are the chances someone has already broken trail through the access with snowmobile? If it's all snowed in, it will make a tough walk.

Good luck.

Tried to go laker huntin this AM to a local lake and it was way ugly- 12 inches of snow over 16 inches of slush-didn't even unload after seein and talkin to a couple of guys that just got back to dry land with ice froze above there knees. Did anyone have better luck?

Yuck, the lakes are a mess up here. Drove up yesterday morning, figured I'd try for some walleye before venturing out for trout on Sunday. After catching a couple eaters and dealing with a ton of slush last night, my snowshoes were frozen on and it took me about fifteen minutes in a heated garage to get them off. And after waking up to -15 temps this morning, I've decided that the trout can wait till some other weekend. smile

The lake was a mess but fishing was fair. My brother and I got five and lost/missed a few more. Kept three from 2 - 5 lbs. We met and fished near a nice guy who offered to pull us and our house off the lake with his Prowler on posi tracks. We ended up stuck in slush three times totaling about an hour. Fun time.

Deet - sounds like a good time - Maybe things will heal up some with the cold coming. Going to ely friday to get my trout fix.

I have some lake trout gear for sale! A rod, reel, and some lures. Hookset31 took me laker fishing, and you guys can keep that. I have a lot more action in my bowstand than I do laker fishing. You guys would starve to death if fish was all we had.

Drove up 38 yesterday and there is evidence that the trout lakes along that run have been seeing some activity. I didn't see anyone fishing but the left tracks.

bmc,

How did you do? You can't start the thread and then not give a report!

Vos,

Bowstand action in January?

I didn't like fishing lakers either until I finally had some success. Now I see why guys get addicted to it. It's a fresh new challenge for when you get sick of catching little fish that are either off or on. But the fish/time ratio is very low on average, in my experience.

Did anyone catch any big fish?

I haven't been out yet, but am starting my days off and will definitely give them a go next week sometime.

Deet, any size to the ones you caught? I'm assuming they were lakers?

Brian,

Nothing big, but some eaters. Opening day our fish were 10, 14, 16, 20, and 24 inches. We kept the biggest three. Went Saturday as well and (two of us) got two, about 16 and 18 inches, and missed/lost several more. Yes, lakers. It was the funnest ice fishing I've ever had even though I miss more than I catch and I haven't caught anything big yet. Good luck this week.

Come on, Brian, let's hear how you're doing!

Took my wife this Saturday and we got three. She caught one, which was our biggest, weighing in at a whopping 2 LB, and it was her first trout ever. That part was fun. Fishing was MUCH slower than the last two weekends, and the fish were smaller.

I'm going out on Green Lake in Redby this weekend. Scouted on Monday, no slush whatsoever on the lake, perfect conditions plus I don't think one person has fished the lake all Winter.

Still haven't made it out troutin'. Maybe Saturday? I just don't feel like fighting the lake conditions to fish.

It's easier for me to go to the archery club and shoot my bow!

I must be getting older and a little lazier? crazy

Fished Caribou from 9 to 12 today. Iced 6 lakers from 11 to 12. Too bad none of them were big enough to keep....biggest was maybe 1.5 lbs.
