Heavy duty bolt extractor?

311Hemi

Question

Anyone know of a bolt extractor that will be tougher than an easy out? I have a bolt I need to remove from a sled that I am pretty sure will break an easy out. I don't have a good way to get heat to the bolt which is secured with red locktite.

I might be able to insert the easy out and heat the easy out red hot to heat of the rest of the bolt.....but was curious if there was a better brand or heavier duty extractor as I have broken easy outs before.

If you heat the Easy Out to red, you will draw the temper, soften it, and it will just twist. That said, it is not a bad idea to drill out the bolt, insert a steel rod that has been heated cherry red and hope that softens the Loctite. While everything is still hot, try using the easy out and the bolt should come out.

If you know what size of thread it is, you could drill a little smaller than the tap drill size using a left hand drill. You might get enough heat to melt the loctite, and the left hand drill will back the threads right out of the hole once it breaks through.

I was hoping to get by without drilling it out, but will resort to that if needed. Good idea on the left hand drill bit....certainly could be worth a try if I go that route.

Weld a nut onto the end of it, let cool and turn it out. Weld through the center of the nut, the heat will also loosen the loctite. Snap on has the best extractors, part no E1020. All the other ones are junk.

I have seen that option as well, but I don't have a welder.

Looks like a non issue at this point, my buddy took the sled in to get it fixed ealier this week. Thanks for the replies!
