I know Nagels has always been open for me in the summer at around 6 am. Not sure about Jons a little further down the road.Holiday, which I think is open 24hrs, also sells bait. They have crappie minnows, fatheads and even shiners back there. You scoop them yourself. They also have spikes and waxies.

So aside from just providing bait, which stores do you guys prefer that offer the best customer service, tackle and know how? I am willing to drive a little off the beaten path to support the local guy/gal that takes pride in their store/shop. I have bought from the Holiday store in Faribault and there is nothing wrong with them, but it just didn't give the whole bait shop experience.

I like John's Bait and Tackle, And the gas station in Shieldville can be great it the owner himself is working. Nagel's bait can be hit and miss depending on which day you catch him on...

Pretty much hit the nail on the head there Nate. You never know what kind of mood Andy is going to be in at Nagels. He won't really give you a ton of information, and if he does, it will be the same information next week. I have not really been to Johns very many times, but have had good experiences with him. To me, Nagels seems to have the best minnows in the summer, in terms of size. This past summer his fatheads were huge.

Big fan of johns bait shop too. Talked to the guy a bunch this summer. Nice selection and fair prices.

Try them both out. I like both places. Nagel's tells it like it is and can tell some good old stories. Helpful guy if you ask the questions.

The bait shop in Shieldsville opens at 5:00 am 7 days a week. No need to buy your bait the night before.
