On an average year (Not like last year)

Where are the pike, walleye, smallmouth, and crappies located during the week leading up to memorial day weekend? I am looking for depths, shallow 5-15 ft, mid 15-30, deep 30+ fow. Also are water levels looking to rise this year and not be as low as lst year? Should be up there around that time this year and hopefully not have the spring start as warm as last year.

Hi L.P.,

The best pike fishing is as soon as the ice goes out in the shallow bays, as time goes on they will go out in deeper water, you will still find some around the cabbage. Walleyes, we catch them 2 to 40 feet depending on location. During the time your coming I've caught walleyes in Black Bay, Kettle Falls, American Narrows, Sand Bay, Dove Bay, Kempton Channel, Jackfish...etc. Every year differs, you can't say a place they are going to be till we get to that time period. Smallies, your guess as good as mine! Crappies, in the weeds, normally a excellent time of the year, again it justs depends, in Rainy many times no 2 years are the same. And water levels, thats is the toughest of all, some years are high water others are not, we allready have 50 inches of snow & if that keeps up, the water will be high. Asking what the waters levels will be at the end of May is like predicting when the rapture will happen...only the good Lord knows that!!!

Sincerely,

Fishmeister

Thanks, I guess I figured the walleyes would still be somewhat shallow. It's nice to know there is a shot at some nice crappies this time around.

Is there any specific way to go about finding the bigger pike in the deeper water? Last year we found some in the shallow weeds but nothing huge. Did see some bigger ones follow on rocky points.

Hi L.P.,

Actually I don't target Pike then, but we do occasionally hook into them while fishing walleyes.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister
