Broadheads for Turkey hunting

Musky hunter 82

I'm planning on hunting Turkeys for the first time this year and am wondering what broadheads to use (I know it's going to be harder to kill one with a bow, but it's way more rewarding to me). Right now I use a mechanical for deer hunting in 100 grain. Would this get the job done? I've heard that you don't want the arrow to pass through, and that you should aim for a spot in between the thigh and the wing. Is that the best place to shot them? Thank you for the advice, and good luck to everyone in the drawing.

I used a 3 blade rage since I wanted to get rid of them. I shot mine at 5 yards and dropped the bird but he got up a little bit later and hobbled off which I had to chase him. I think almost any broad head will work. I've seen the Guillotine broad head but that don't work with how I have things set up and I don't know if I'm that good of a shot to shoot just the head off.

Any head used for deer that you feel comfortable with will take a turkey. That being said, I always recommend a large diameter mechanical. The vital area on a turkey is about the size of a softball, a larger head has a better chance of getting into the heart-lung area.

As far as WHERE to shoot them, there are three tranes of thought. Code-man mentioned the guillotine for head shots. There are actually a few different heads made for the head shot, however I believe none will fly with your current set-up. You need different arrows, etc., besides, I never seem to see a turkey that will stand still long enough for this type of shot.

That leaved the two that most use. One is to aim just up from the leg in the hip area. The thought here is to stop him from running and to cut the large vein going to the leg resulting in quick blood loss.

For me and most others, the heart-lung area is right at the butt of the wing. Any shot from here up towards the neck should put a bird down very quickly.

An arrow that hits the center of the bird likely results in a gut shot and much chasing may result.

It's a very exciting hunt any way you choose to do it. Good luck!

the guy i went with in Kansas said everyone who ever hunted with the Guillotine down there asked him if he had some extra broadheads laying around because they couldn't get a perfect head shot

As DonBo stated any head used for deer will work on turkey's

I use hammerheads by rocket. I change the tip out with a larger chisel tip. I like how this bust up the bird. I also have taken a handful with sidewinder by rocket they do just as much damage.

This last fall I took a hen walking out from my tree stand after shooting a buck using the meat seeker. That really did a good job better then I thought. I will have those three in my quiver when I enter the spring woods this year.

I hunt archery only season in NE for the last 7 years and it's a blast. One thing for sure I do like coming back and taking the old pipe bomb out of the gun safe and getting even. smile

I really perfer the broadside shot over a front shot. I will have the wing butt or hips to aim at. I have taken a few through the wing butt they can still run. My best shot is taking out the hips no legs they can't run or fly.Good luck and you will be hooked after on season.

I use the rage 2 blade because i bought them for deer and didnt like them so i wanted to get rid of them they work good for turkeys since they dont penetrate very well, i always try to wait till the bird comes out of strut a little bit its very east to shoot threw all of the extra feathers when there in full strut, ive always heard the saing "hit em high watch em die, hit em low watch em go"
