Question

Heard some news today that is making me want to change companies.

What are some of the ways you look for job openings?

I am looking anywhere in the tri state area for a Manufacturing Engineering position.

Thanks,

indeed.com- better to specify on state or mertropolitan area, then search by distance from there. Also, be as specific as you can with job title otherwise you will have to wade through a bunch of [PoorWordUsage].

I can feel your pain I was just laid off this summer and no offense contrary to Judge Smails I would suggest that you wade as much as you can and hit as many as you can as quickly as you can. Took me 91 days to find a job that way, I know a lot of people on day 730.

Good Luck

I'm curious. What exactly is a Manufacturing Engineer?

Simply put, it's a person who designs the process of how something is manufactured in the most cost saving method possible according to the demand required by the customer.

Another way of putting it is the person who oversees the design engineers whom have unrealistic hopes and dreams for a product that is unachievable...but looks cool on your CAD system...until we tell them they're crazy.

Simply put, we design the process to make a product, often requires re-designing the product to avoid any potential failures. Too often design engineers live in the world of "perfect circles"...manufacturing engineers have never seen a "perfect circle"...Optomist vs. Realist in the manufacturing world.

Thanks for the imputs guys!

I know of a company in Cambridge that will soon be looking for a Project Estimator. Not sure if that falls into your category. My old man is the only one the company has currently, and has convinced the higher-ups to hire some reinforcements.

Run through your contact list and get the word out! Seems a lot of companies now days are hiring from within. But, jobs don't always get filled from within. I've always had the best luck talking with the people I work closest with...vendors, suppliers, customers.

Wooddale church Job Transition Group has a great yahoo group that sends out email alerts about job opportunities. Ther are many engineering opportunities. Mainly MN, but out of state as well.

They meet every monday at 7:15 AM. If you are not able to go, send me a PM and I will ask about getting on the email alert system.

They are located by the intersection of 494 and 212 Eden Prairie.

Truth, AgCo just announced a big expansion and they'll be hiring a bunch of dudes. Something to maybe look into.

When I worked in the Ethanol industry in a middle management position I did my share of hiring. When I had an opening for a skilled position the first place I looked was the Minnesota Job Bank and Minnesota Works. You can find these on the Minnesota Dept of Labor and Industries site.

I might be biased being in the recruiting and consulting business but get out there and start working with 2-3 GOOD recruiting companies. I'm not in mfg/engineering but rather IT however I can't tell you how many job openings I'm seeing these days that are posted through HR online however the actual hiring managers prefer to work directly through a recruiting agency instead.

No offense to HR people however when it comes specialized job fields like IT or engineering, HR often doesn't have the specific knowledge to effectively screen resumes. The hiring managers get frustrated by this when they receive 100 unqualified resumes from HR and instead come to companies like us who can narrow the field down to 3-4 qualified people.

Also, I have also been working with hiring managers who due to tight employment budgets have to bring people on board on a contract to hire basis as opposed to a direct hire. In this case the hiring managers are often not even looking at resumes from HR, not because of qualifications but strictly because of budgetary restrictions that are out of your/their control. As a result, you may be applying for positions that you're extremely qualified for but aren't even being considered for.

Lots of great info here guys. Considering that I'm soon to be out of work as well, I look forward to the day that I will be sitting back in school.

As far as Manufacturing Engineers compared to Design Engineers, you just can't explain it any better than the way Truth said it. wink

)^*$%@#!! Design Engineers. grin
