Finally - 1st Time on Superior for Lakers - Where?

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

Fished many lakes & rivers in Minnesota for over 45 years, but never got onto Superior for Lakers, etc. in the Winter - until finally this year.

Which areas are usually fished out of? General rigging/bait/depths/timeframes? I have a Mn. license only and would be coming up from the south.

Thanks much, Guys!

Not to rain on your parade but I don't think we have any ice on the mn shore that is walkable in areas that lakers might inhabit. looks like some chunk ice out from 21st ave in duluth, but nothing you could walk on. I have heard the apostales aren't even locked up yet.

Yea, I wasn't talking about now, grin but later as it lockes up.

What are the areas I should go out of later & the other ?'s from the original post?

Thanks!

Extremely rare for the lake to lock up. I would plan on bringing a boat if I were you. Or buy a WI license and fish out of Ashland around the islands if that ice ever locks up.

There's really no guarantee that it will lock up frown I think the last time superior had any walkable ice in the duluth area (lester to french river) was in 2007.

So yeah, chequamegon bay in WI would be about your only option. I went there last year and only caught 1 whitefish. Last year apparently was one of the worst winters there (go figure).

I would contact Jim Hidson at Hudsons on the spot guide service and he can give you the skinny in the Ashland/Bayfield area. I like the island for lakers. For some reason I seem to do best jigging big silver swedish pimples and hearing out by Basswood Island.

Yes the South Shore Ashland/Bayfield is what your looking for.

Or Inland lake trout.
