Lake of the Woods Warden

Recommended Posts

Just got back from fishing on Lake of the Woods near Pine Island, and fishing was a little slow. While fishing I put down a different jig on a different rod, but forgot to reel up one of the other lines. Shortly later, there was a knock on the door, and it was a young Game Warden. He noticed the extra line, and ended up writing me a ticket for it. He was respectful enough about it, but I didn't feel I deserved a ticket. He stated he was one of the local wardens, and lives up there. Has anyone else had any run-in's with him? How has he been with anyone else?

Sounds like he was doing his job and you had one to many lines down. I guess you should chalk it up as a lesson learned. I think it is great that they are out there checking on us and makeing sure it is done legal.

There is to many out there takeing advantge of our resources and they need to be stopped.

To the game wardens keep up the good work but do it in a professional matter.

How can you forget to reel up a line. Did you put them in the same hole? If not you knew what you were doing.

I am going to pay the ticket, and know I it is my fault. However, the posting wasn't ask people if it is alright to have an extra line down, but to ask what people know about this particular Warden, and if anyone has ran into him before......

must have been gorecki? I'm not a big fan, but nothing to do with conservation related issues. more of a personal issue.

Really do not see an issue here.

You had too many lines down and got a ticket.

Why do you not deserve the ticket?

Last time I went up to LOW we had a group of 5 and we were fishing in portables about 200 yards apart. We had vhf radios to talk back and forth. A stealth warden supprized us and asked to enter our portable. We no more than unzipped the zipper and one of my friends in the house starts telling a nasty joke over the radio. I reached for the radio to shut it off and he stops me and listens to the joke laughs and asks the guys name. He gets on the radio saying he is office such and such and tells my friend he's one sick puppy and can expect a visit from the warden. I guess the ice was broke cause he had a couple good jokes of his own.

Yeah I hate it when they put all those holes in a Day House 8 - 12 holes, just to many empty holes that should have lines, LOL. Thats why I like my portable it has two holes and room for two lines. I have enough problems sometime with those two. Nice to see a CO doing his job and being respectful to you for breaking the LAW. Just can't see where you think you shouldn't have been ticketed for it is all. Sometime you just can't fix STUPID

We had the occassion of his visit during our December trip. My son had forgotten his license and he took his information from his DL and said he would check to be sure he had a license (which he does) and if he didn't he would send him his ticket in the mail. He could have written a ticket right on the spot for no license in possession. He was very professional and courteous and we had a conversation regarding a couple of CO's that I know from down my way. He went to school with both of them. They have a tough job, cover lots of area, but can never cover it all. For everyone that gets caught with the extra line many got by with it. He also relayed information regarding fishing success in the area that he was checking. Technically he could confiscate fish and rods if he wanted too, so the ticket isn't to bad, just raises the price per 1# of fillets a little. smile

Probably not many times, he looked like he was 20 years old, and probably his first winter doing the job. Most Wardens you see out there are 40+ years old. Besides there has got to be a handful of them out there on the lake each day, and I ended up with the newbie. Again, it was my fault alone for the extra line, and I will pay for it. Just strange getting in trouble with a guy half my age....

HaHa. The last job I was on my foreman was 25 years old. That was kinda strange too.

LakeoftheWoods: Do all these CO'S live in Baudette? The one who visited us said that he did. Because he was on a sled and had on plenty of clothing for the cold weather I didn't see his name tag so not sure which one we talked to.

I don't understand your use of the term "run-in". How can you call it a run-in when you had too many lines in the water and the warden was respectful?

Can you imagine the number of folks they encounter with the same excuse whose true intention is to fish multiple lines? How does he know who really mistakenly left the line in and whose intentions are illegal? You could be the most honest person in the world, but he doesn't know you. The most important things are that he is consistent in his job and he is respectful.

Could it be there was a bit of intention to place the blame somewhere it doesn't belong?

Good friend just got back from LOW and also reported his portable was visited by a C.O. Said they had a nice visit and was a very nice guy. He was glad to see them out and about, and since fishing was so slow they enjoyed the distraction. His son had caught a 23 inch walleye and released it back down the hole about 20 minutes before the C.O. showed up...it was a wonderful lesson since the timing was perfect for the "honesty and always obey the law or you WILL get caught" talk that started right after the C.O. left.

Just had to chuckle when he told me that story.

Oh they let us fish with extra lines all the time up there, and never write us a ticket...Really?

I get a visit at least once a year while I'm up there Ice fishing and never once in ten years have we been in violation, beacause we play by the rules. Period.

This is a joke and there is a punch line coming soon right?

Seems like he acted pretty mature for a 20 year old newbie. He could have confiscated your fish and fishing gear right then and there and that probably would have made the rest of your fishing trip quite enjoyable.

I don't understand what age has to do with anything. Bottom line here is that you broke the law and now have to pay the fine for it.

Bottom line is, he is reading your post and knows who you are. 20 year olds are very computer literate.

My 2 cousins and myself just finished up a windy 4 day trip to our favorite lake. It was the last of the year and was eventful to say the least. When we arrived, water temperatures were 61 degrees and when we left yesterday morning the water temps had dropped to 54 degrees. The fishing was fantastic, once again, and we caught walleyes, bass, and northerns on minnows and crawlers(northerns only on minnows). We found the fish adjacent to shallow rock piles(14') in 20'-28' of water. Our best fishing hours of the day were ~5:30 -twilight in the evenings and until ~ 10:30 in the mornings. Although those two time periods were prime time, fish bit all day. For us, the bite was very light and we probably missed or lost as many fish as we caught. Some people think I'm nuts when I say bead color can make a difference and it certainly did this trip. My cousin's "go to" green/white bead combo did zilch on this trip. It was one translucent red bead and a plain size #2 gamakatsu hook with a 3' leader that produced the fish. We ended up with 137 walleyes and 19 bass for the 4 day outing. We caught far more 17"-19.999" walleyes on this trip than on our previous trips and our numerous slot fish measured from 21"-25". My younger cousin caught 4 slot fish in ~20 minutes one evening. We fish exclusively for walleyes and additional species are incidental. With that said, we caught some beautiful smallmouth bass on this trip and they were right down there with the walleyes, usually in the rocks. As usual, everything is catch and release except for the fish we eat while there and the 12 walleyes(3 individual limits) we take home to the wives. While cleaning some eaters we kept for supper, we always check the stomach contents. One of the walleyes had the jig that is pictured below loose in its stomach!  No attached line, no embedded hook, just the jig! It baffled us as to how in the world it could have gotten there . As you can see, the jig is in good shape so the fish must have swallowed it recently .   The boat traffic was minimal this trip and we had a couple days where it looked as if we had the lake to ourselves. Sunday was a brutal day with wind gusts to 50MPH!. We stayed in and ventured out finally at ~5:00. It turned out to be the best 2 hours of the entire trip. This time, the baby loons were around, the eagles were abundant, the changing leaves made the entire lake area look like a painting. If I could make only one short trip a year to the lake, now would be the time. What capped off the trip was the magnificent display of the Northern Lights. We can't wait for next spring to return, God willing, and, in the meantime, good fishing.  MarkB🙂 The jig found in the stomach of a walleye we ate.   My young cousin with his best of the trip.   a chunky 17" smallmouth   19.5" smallmouth

What an amazing extended weekend. The fish were happy and cooperated nicely.   We also had the unique experience of fishing under Northern Lights each of the last three nights in pristine weather conditions.  I wish everyone could have that experience, even if just once.  The pics below don't do it justice, though you get the idea.  The walleyes are putting on the feedbag and some are getting rather plump.  We caught mostly slot fish with several 'overs' in our bag.  Our two biggest weighed 8lbs 5oz and 8lb 3oz.     The crappies were active at dusk and beyond.  Almost all of the ones we caught were 14" or bigger.  The biggest we caught was a bit over 15".  We lost two muskies at the boat and caught a 38" pike after dark - quite surprising.   Every fish we caught was immediately released btw.  Water temp 54/55 when we left.  All-in-all, another great fishing experience on Lake Vermilion - for which I'm so incredibly appreciative.

Yep, it's just you know and I know every dad who takes his kids or family camping for the first time.  Is buying the camping gas no matter the cost, cuz it says "Camping" on it! 🤭🤭
