LOW Lake Current???

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Just was doing thinking some while I wait anxiousy for our 6th annual sleeper trip at the end of the month... Thought of a question I'd like to float to the group...

A few years back (during a DIY trip with the portable) a local was telling us about a circular water current in the lake (due to the Rainy River) - which if I remember correctly was counter-clockwise. I believe he was trying to tell us that the fish tend to feed into the current so we should position our portable to ensure we were not "upstream" of any other houses to ensure the most fish making it to our house. I wasn't quite sure what to make of this advice as it sounded a little far-fetched - but possibly true?

With the exception of that lone portable trip, we've been stationary in a sleeper with 4 guys the majority of my LOW trips so I never really could verify that theory as far as house position. However, within our sleeper there are some holes that tend to produce better than others. I have noticed in our sleeper that the southeast hole set, on average, produces slightly better than the rest. Perhaps this hole set is somewhat "downstream" of the others(We usually fish somewhere between Adrians road and the border)?

At any rate - all things being equal, do any of you guys buy into any lake current influencing the hot houses/hot hole sets?

(Perhaps I should rename this thread "Help me pick the best hole set in my sleeper" laugh )

I've always try and get the North East corner when in the hard sides, or a least the east side for sure. Always have done better IMO. Only problem the guys I fish with now have figured it out and it can be a battle, lol. I like it best when I'm the only one with Electronic's boy can you hear the crying than. Getting those suspended Walleyes they never know about.

Dry_Fly is right. The north east holes in a perm are most of the time more active. I get stuck on the other side and do well because the guys I fish with miss them and then they come over to me!!

This is wayyyyyyyy further into the Lake of the Woods fishing manual than I will ever get. (Now I have to think back to every trip in a

permanent house I have every had...........uh......OK, too hard. I pass.

If this was true, why wouldn't you place your house to have two or more holes facing north east? I notice a current every time I am fishing that lake, but the current never seems to flowing the same direction as before.

I have noticed that the bobbers on the dead sticks will be on one side of the hole in the morning and then gravitate to the other side in the afternoon...current not sure, but it happens all the time. Last week on the lake the two west side holes out produced the east side big time. Of the 24 bucket fish 20 came from that side of the house, and you guessed it that wasn't the side I was on either. My son was alone on that side and he kicked our butts on the other side. Two days in a row too. He offered to change sides, but we declined. He can only come up once a year so glad to see him having a good time. I was definitley a spectator....LOL smile

Sunny side of the house, now that sounds a little more acceptable to me, due to the fact that fishing dosent get good in the morning until teh sun gets high enough to penetrate, yea you'll pick up a few before then but mostley bucket fish, then as the sun gets behind the trees it tapper of time then shut down. Think I'll experement with this this weeknd. Boar

+1 with Curt!! Does the whole lake spin like the Alaskan Cairn? Perhaps, but I doubt the current would be perceptible enough to affect fish movement.

If you're within a couple miles of the incoming or outgoing rivers you may notice a subtle current, but beyond that it's more affected by wind direction, temperature, weather patterns, water clarity, etc., etc., etc..

Sunny side of the house, in 34 feet of water covered by snow and ice, hmmmmmmm?????

If there was some current, I think I could buy into the fact that the fish could pick up a scent trail that may drift downstream of the house and follow it to the source. But like Bill said - I've noticed my bobber on different sides of the hole within a weekend. So not sure what to make of a possible "prevailing" current given that.

Perhaps the best spot in the house is simply the hole next to the beer cooler smile

LOL!!! laugh Darn it! Missed out on another big money maker....

Will the beer cooler remain stationary, or will it spin on the portable lazy Susan as well?

I can imagine some houses would just continually keep spinning!!! crazy
