Gas options on the taconite

Recommended Posts

I posted this in the Snowmobile users section but have not had any hits and it looks like there are a few sledders that frequent this.

I am planning a trip for my GF and I from her cabin just north of grand rapids up to Lake verillion. We will be riding the taconite the whole way and were wondering what options there are for gas that are not too far off the trail. Does Side Lake have Gas? Also, I have had a hard time finding a decent trail map with businesses listed in St. Louis county, do you guys have any ideas of what club I could contact to get that? Thanks much

You can get some of that info from the snowmobile club in Ely. You can see their site at elyigloodotcom.

There are many options on the Taconite. Communities (gas) along the way are Pengilly, Nashwauk, Side Lake (bit of a ride off the Tac, but have gas, Britt, and at the "Y" Store as you get to Lake V on the Tower end. Also can get on the Lake, head east and end of in the City of Tower to gas up.

Trail maps will available at most gas stations in the area. It is the "Iron Trail" map that will pick up the trails around Calumet and cover all of Vermilion and farther east. Also shows the Ely and Cook area trails. May want to consider riding Vermilion to the Cook end, over to the Arrowhead, to the Bearskin and use the Tim Corey trail to access the Taconite by Side Lake. Nice alternate run for the way back. You can gas up in Cook just off the Bearskin.

Thanks for the responses. I am pretty sure I will be good but my sled only gets about 8 MPG s I just wanted to make sure there was something around. I filled out the Map request form on the ElyIgloo site sohopefully that map will cover to the SE. Thanks again

Also, the DNR has a new feature that you can download and print trail maps. Haven't used it yet, but they are advertising it.

Fortune Bay also has a credit card pump. It is behind the Casino on the west end of the large propane tank, can't miss it there is a fenced in area for the sleds.

Thanks for all the replies, I think we will end up stopping in Side lake for Gas and a bite to eat as that looks to be about half way and then continue to the casino. If we are ahead of schedule, we may venture farther up towards Ely. Thanks again for al the help.
