Are the White Bass biting?

I heard from a buddy that the white bass are hitting pretty good by the bayport access entrance. Can anyone confirm this? I want to go out this weekend but just wanted to look into it first.

Thanks.

Look into the fishing reports at the top of this page. Lot's of people have been talking about the white bass. I didn't catch much when I went but that was my first time on the river.

If you spend time on the river, the whities will come through. I don't think there's any best time or magic pattern to catch them. Go target walley/sauger or crappies and chances are good you'll get into them at some point during the day.

DonBo knows his stuff. But yeah the white bass are biting, Find 35fow and you should find some, they'll be running around 1-5 ft off bottom.

Does anyone have pics of their white bass catches? Can someone give me directions to a general area on the river for white bass? I will be entering st croix via the bayport area.

I don't know where everyone else is getting their White Bass but all of mine have come from closer to the MN side below Anderson point in between 25-30 fow. Only this year, I've got none.

We did pretty good with the Whitebass today. Took a while to find the school, but after we did, it was a great bite and they were aggressive.

i have a nieghbor that just loves them i keep 5 or 6 for him in the 1# to 1#3/4 range and he just loves them he said the key is to just use the top meat. also have a few buddie's that smoke them i have tried it but it's just not for me. i'll take a walleye or crappie's over them anyday.

I guess it just preference. To be honest and it my just be my opinion but I dont think a Walleye or Crappie taste any better. There are more than one way to prepare a fish for eating. Start exploring receipe's and leave behind the usual, smoke, pan fry batter to the rookies. You owe it to your taste buds. smile

On the subject, I certainly think any fish from cooler & even cleaner waters taste better. So does a fish taste better in the Winter than in the Summer? That very well may be... but it depends again.

Mercury my man . . mercury, as well as other stuff hey!

Mercury is an air deposition problem not a point source issue, point source being a factory pipe. Lakes like picturesque Crane on the MN/Can border have nearly the same fish consumption advisory for mercury as the St. Croix does. This info is all on the MN dept. of health website.

The issue with river fish is they have a larger lateral line because of the stained water and the flesh is colored according to the over developed lateral line. In essence when a fish can not see their prey they must feel their prey.

Keep Catchin'

About 6-7 years ago I talked with the DNR down on P4. They were running a few studies but said that Lake Vermillion fish had over double the heavy metals than the pepin area!! Thats Pepin but the river in general is a pretty good filter for most things??

Whitebass was biting pretty good yesterday. Morning and evening hours were the best. Hole hop until you find them, but after you do, it is constant action.
