Help needed on ice fishing the Croix.

Recommended Posts

I have fished the Croix a half a dozen times in the winter without success. I would really like to know more about ice fishing the river. Is there anyone that would be willing to show me how before I loose all of my hair! I have all the needed equipment. I am not a wacko. I would just like to meet up with someone that is willing to teach me about catching fish on the river in the winter. I live in Cottage grove and work in Hudson.

Thank you,

Mark

hey mark, just keep at it!! it gets better and better everytime we go out due to what we have already learned from the day before, this is the first year that we actually spent this much time on the croix. the key is to be patient especailly during down times, this year i had the most luck with the deadstick, almost all my fish came on a diamond jig head with a full minnow, there will be ALOT of sniffers and lookers but just let the minnow do its work and wait for the bite. sometimes the fish just whacks it, and other times they just play around with it, i like to stay around 30-32 feet on the MN side and away from the crowd but not too far. let me know the next time you go out, and lets see if you could get on some fish.

some days are different, you could catch one or two all day and the next day just completely hammer them. yeah its pretty boring watching the deadstick but once the pole bobbs its worth the wait...

on yeah and the deadstick should be set at anywhere from 20-25 feet in the water column, but it really depends on where you mark the fish though. good luck!

I also have been out several times without a lot of success but after my last outing I think Moe just nailed it on the head, very good advice right there

Thanks guy's. I think I will try it again this Saturday morning out of bayport and maybe Sunday afternoon on the WI side just south of the 94 bridge. Anyone want to join?

I'd say fish north of the 94 bridge. Find a nice drop and fish either the ledge of it(25-30fow) or the deep basin near the drop(35fow). Since its the river fish will be moving in and out all day. Better buy 20 different jigheads and find out which one works. If you find the right one you will hammer them.

I have to chime in here...there is NO drop off north of the 94 bridge, it is a 13 to 16 foot flat. People can fish wherever they want, my two cents are to not fish the 94 area alone or as a newcomer, because of river current. The Bayport area ice is ten times safer than the 94 bridge area. From what I understand the power plant area is a decent bite.

Kind regards, Turk

Good advice Turk. The entire area around the bridge is shakey at best. Ice conditions seem to change daily. Best left to those with loads of experience.
