out there tonight and got skunked but stayed away from the packs. Got chased by three coyotes that were not scared of a running 4-wheeler and a black lab they need to be taken out if there that brave.

Hey fellas, Work and mite hockey have kept me out of the game thus far but looking to hit Owasso 1/9/11. All I need is an ice report with black ice to white ice ratio. Can we get out there in a minivan? I appreciate it. Mama would not be happy if the minivan takes a bath...

I drove my ford exploder on owasso on friday... about 15-16inches of good ice and a couple inches of white stuff. I saw a full size truck haulin across the lake, so I'm pretty sure its all good all over.

We did okay, 3 keeper eyes, a bunch of perch, and a couple crappies on friday between 3-7pm.

hunter24, A 31 inch walleye is a true trophy anywhere. I have been fishing that lake for years now and have never heard of such a big fish coming from there. I'm not busting your chops but I would definitely need to see a picture of that pig before I reallllly believe it. What side of the lake were you fishing if you don't mind me asking? And 25 minutes is an awful long fight for any fish.......

I went out last Saturday with a group of 8. We only caught 2 'Eyes and they were both real, real small....Like 7-8inchers.

Not doubting the big catch though, just letting you know what we came up with. Also a few small perch and 1 crappie. Went out from the beach just like the others. Fished from 2-7pm. We went a bit to the right off the beach. A bit shallower like 19FOW and tip-ups at 8ft, 16ft, and 22ft. Nothing all day on our Suckers...Although we did catch 2 suckers as well!! LOL.

We were marking bigger fish on the bottom, I had 1 decent hit, nothing gigantic feeling though. Another guy came to talk with us as we left. He had the same story. Marking fish 1 foot off bottom, but no takers. We tried, pimple, buckshot, flyers, darters (lindy and chubby, small and large) tipped with Mheads, waxies, you name it. My girlfriend caught both 'Eyes and she just had a small glow jig and minnow.

Post that picture and take away the doubt. Thats why we have cameras.

I dont get this lake. I grew up on this lake for 16 years, fishing it hard the whole time. Always caught plenty of fish with some decent size to them, except for the walleyes. Could catch walleyes whenever I darn well pleased but they were always small, 7-8 inches. Every year summer I would catch a couple of big 'eyes 25-30 but it was always when I was fishing for something else...bass, musky. I look at the stocking report and they are constantly pumping this lake with walleye since I moved 6 years ago.

What's the deal? Are the fish not growing? Where are the schools of 'eyes that I was constantly catching 6 years ago that should now have some size to them?

I agree, I know there are some nice sized eyes in that lake and one would think that there should only be more after checking out the stocking data.

I'm not going to give exact spots that I have caught/seen some nice eyes caught through ice but I will say this... Try and get away from the same old "walk out from the beach and set up." There is a huge saddle in the middle of the lake and same type of structure on the west side of the lake as there is on the east side right out from the access/beach. Move around and spread out and those eyes will be a lot more willing to bite! Good luck and fish hard!

In college, I fished this lake often for both eyes and muskies. Through the ice, the evening bite was the best from a half hour before dark to a half hour after dark. I never had much luck during other times.

Fished from 5:30 until around 8:00. Only small crappies. Anybody have any luck with the walleyes, big or small??

I am headed out tomorrow. Never fished this lake. Is the beach people are tlaking about near the access on the north side of the lake? I do not think that is where I am going to fish but I would like a back up plan, sounds like I can just look for the crowds to tell. Is the north access the only and/or the best place to drive on? Come and say hi if you are out. I drive a tan Silverado w/topper. Look for the HSO, Iceleader, and Lowrance Decals. I have a FT Yukon. I always like to bee ess and have a beer. Good luck fishing!

Yes the only access is that by the beach on the north and east side. there may not be a lot of people out there, i was out there last night and there were 3 or 4 perm and me and some other guy. no one was in the perm as far as i could tell. i would suggest over by the ski jump. but if you decide to go to the north and west corner be carefull there is a spring up there, or so i have heard and seen on lake maps. it is about 25' down but just an fyi! safe fishing!

Thanks Shafer! I was not thinking of the NW side, but I appreciate the warning. May be I should think of it wink. I think I am going to be in the middle somewhere. I saw some structure on my map that has me intrigued.

Would like to be out Monday as well, the wife's day off. She seems to get a little moody if I go fishing on her day off. If I have some luck on this lake I think I will be spending some more time on it. I normally fish BE, but I just need a change. From what I can tell Owasso seems to be a good alernative for a metro lake. I cannot beleive I have not been on this lake before.

bohmer, the middle of the lake is really shallow (3-5fow) until you get over more towards the west side of the lake. I would try just off the saddle in some water around 20 feet. Like mentioned before, around where the ski jump is can produce to, just might have to weed through some small perch. good luck! let us know how you did.

You read my mind, that is where I was thinking. I will keep my eyes open for the ski jump as well. I like finding perch, I seem to find walters when they are around. Heck, if I can find some size to the perch I will have almost as good a meal.

Report:

Wet lines 8:30 - 3:30. All the the perch you want (if you do not care about size). One walter around noon, small. Using a pimple and minnow head. Good luck all.

Had something crazy happen this morning a fork horn buck came running up to Finn and I while sitting on the pond at just after legal shooting time. Finn bark and the buck snorted and came closer. Next I saw was a big white flash of Finn going after this buck. They made it to the field and then the buck started chasing Finn. The buck stopped at 40 yards from me and Finn was behind me. I thought I was going to have shoot this buck if it tried to get me. I also could have got my fall turkey as, but you can’t have a dog with or shot bigger than 4 shot. I had 2 shot only with me. What a crazy day. Only had a few ducks close enough but I was busy trying make sure this deer didn’t hurt my dog.

Mark, Great that you made it back up and great report on another great trip. Sitting here in Urbandale, I am jealous. I’m working on training my new lab, not at all sure he will be ready for pheasants! Thanks for sharing your trip, RLG

My 2 cousins and myself just finished up a windy 4 day trip to our favorite lake. It was the last of the year and was eventful to say the least. When we arrived, water temperatures were 61 degrees and when we left yesterday morning the water temps had dropped to 54 degrees. The fishing was fantastic, once again, and we caught walleyes, bass, and northerns on minnows and crawlers(northerns only on minnows). We found the fish adjacent to shallow rock piles(14') in 20'-28' of water. Our best fishing hours of the day were ~5:30 -twilight in the evenings and until ~ 10:30 in the mornings. Although those two time periods were prime time, fish bit all day. For us, the bite was very light and we probably missed or lost as many fish as we caught. Some people think I'm nuts when I say bead color can make a difference and it certainly did this trip. My cousin's "go to" green/white bead combo did zilch on this trip. It was one translucent red bead and a plain size #2 gamakatsu hook with a 3' leader that produced the fish. We ended up with 137 walleyes and 19 bass for the 4 day outing. We caught far more 17"-19.999" walleyes on this trip than on our previous trips and our numerous slot fish measured from 21"-25". My younger cousin caught 4 slot fish in ~20 minutes one evening. We fish exclusively for walleyes and additional species are incidental. With that said, we caught some beautiful smallmouth bass on this trip and they were right down there with the walleyes, usually in the rocks. As usual, everything is catch and release except for the fish we eat while there and the 12 walleyes(3 individual limits) we take home to the wives. While cleaning some eaters we kept for supper, we always check the stomach contents. One of the walleyes had the jig that is pictured below loose in its stomach!  No attached line, no embedded hook, just the jig! It baffled us as to how in the world it could have gotten there . As you can see, the jig is in good shape so the fish must have swallowed it recently .   The boat traffic was minimal this trip and we had a couple days where it looked as if we had the lake to ourselves. Sunday was a brutal day with wind gusts to 50MPH!. We stayed in and ventured out finally at ~5:00. It turned out to be the best 2 hours of the entire trip. This time, the baby loons were around, the eagles were abundant, the changing leaves made the entire lake area look like a painting. If I could make only one short trip a year to the lake, now would be the time. What capped off the trip was the magnificent display of the Northern Lights. We can't wait for next spring to return, God willing, and, in the meantime, good fishing.  MarkB🙂 The jig found in the stomach of a walleye we ate.   My young cousin with his best of the trip.   a chunky 17" smallmouth   19.5" smallmouth

What an amazing extended weekend. The fish were happy and cooperated nicely.   We also had the unique experience of fishing under Northern Lights each of the last three nights in pristine weather conditions.  I wish everyone could have that experience, even if just once.  The pics below don't do it justice, though you get the idea.  The walleyes are putting on the feedbag and some are getting rather plump.  We caught mostly slot fish with several 'overs' in our bag.  Our two biggest weighed 8lbs 5oz and 8lb 3oz.     The crappies were active at dusk and beyond.  Almost all of the ones we caught were 14" or bigger.  The biggest we caught was a bit over 15".  We lost two muskies at the boat and caught a 38" pike after dark - quite surprising.   Every fish we caught was immediately released btw.  Water temp 54/55 when we left.  All-in-all, another great fishing experience on Lake Vermilion - for which I'm so incredibly appreciative.
