Coleman lantern replacement parts?

bikeoutback

Question

I have an old coleman lantern. In "inherited" it from my father and I remember we used it camping as a kid in MI so it's at least 16+ years old. It's one that takes coleman fuel oil and it worked about a year ago but this past summer it appears it has stopped. When I go to prime it it never builds pressure as far as I can tell. I can put my thumb over the hole and pump continuously and it never gets any tougher on the 50th pump than the 1st. I know there is parts in there that I can replace but I have 2 problems:

1. I don't know what they are called or where to look it up?

2. I don't know who would even carry such parts anymore? I have not searched in depth too much as of yet as it's winter but would like to get it going before summer again.

I know I could get a new lantern of a different type of any number of reasons but I already own this one and I rarely see them these days that have a rear handle with shield to carry and project light out 180 degrees. I'd rather just fix it.

Almost anywhere carries a replacement pump for them I know walmart and cabelas do and most likely gander mtn. I have had to replace the pump on my old lantern before simple to do but after I had replaced it I upgraded to a propane lantern. If you look through the camping sections of these places you can probably find what you are lokking for to fix it.

Don't buy a new pump just yet. Try oiling the pump. Pull the pump apart and put some light oil on it. I have a lantern that is 40 years old and still has the original pump. A little maintenance goes a long ways.

Right!!! There should be a hole right on the pump cap, squirt some in it,the older ones had a leather seat the oil will swell it and it should work.

Even if it hasn't been oiled or maintained in 15 years? Sorry I don't know much about this stuff but I'll give it a try can't hurt.

I'm sure you probably know this, but did you turn the pump knob counterclockwise a turn at least, before you try to pump. Then turn clockwise all the way after pumping it up?

Yes, try the oil. Just did so to mine as I was having the same problem and it took care of the issue promptly.

I don't recall which way I turned it... I followed the instructions on the lantern to light it. It even worked 2 summers ago as I had it lit then after replacing the mantles. It just wouldn't pressurize at all. There was 4 of us looking at it for about 30 minutes to be sure. Then we just got a propane lantern out. I'll try and oil it.

if putting some oil in the hole doesn't do it, take it apart and really oil the leather down and kind of soften it up with your fingers. work the oil in really good.

You can get just about any part on colmans web site. I had the same problem with my inherited lantern and bought a new seal kit. I also beleave they have a parts breakdown on it also.

The new seals in the pumps on stoves and lanterns are rubber it looks like (or some rubber like substance)
