So I was out on Madison the other day remembering when I moved to Mankato and my early days of ice fishing.

Five gallon buckets were a rare commodity. I was lucky enough to know someone who worked at Hilltop Tavern and got me a green pickle bucket. I had a hand auger a sinker weight to measure water depth and a stick pole. I figured I was a ahead of the times cause I taped a summer reel to it ! No hard house so I sat in the open air with my leather choppers and a bad pair of boots.

So last week I was sitting out in the portable watching the Marcum at my feet, enjoying the heat from the Buddy heater and sipping a hot cup of coffee, thinking about old times. After a taking a brief phone call and checking my email on the Driod I decided to call it a night. I hit the remote start on the truck and followed the headlights to shore and climbed into the warm waiting truck and wondered how things could be any easier.

Nice! Remember the days of spoon augers and cardboard boxes for shelter? I spent many nights years ago sharing a coleman lantern for heat and our only depth finder was a lead weigt with a clamp on it. Depth was measured by arm lengths not in feet. My how technology has changed.

I rememember the day when i didn't have money and have always wanted to try ice fishing before cause i never done it in my life. So i spent the whole 35 cents i had in my pocket and bought a jig. somehow i managed to round up some wax worms and fishing line at the house. not sure where it came from or how old it was. took the fishing line and tied it to a random stick i found laying there by the boat access. didn't need an auger cause i would go find a random hole that someone had just previously cut and here i caught my first fish through the ice. a nice 8 inch sunfish smile I look back at that today and ask myself "what was i thinking" lol
