Sleeper shack meals

Recommended Posts

We are heading up on a week for 3 days in a sleeper. I'm in the process of making the meal plans. This year we are staying at Arnesons so will have a stove top and oven in the shack which opens up a few more options for dinner. We usually do venison steaks and fish fry of course. Just curious to hear some of your best menu items you guys have come up with!

A crockpot full of duck chili with some honey drizzled cornbread on the side is one of my favorites. I also like prepping a batch of sausage gravy for some biscuits and gravy in the morning.

I like to bring things that have been prepared at home or don't require a bunch of prep work on the ice. Can't go wrong with bringing the weber either.

Lasagna isn't a bad option. Either homemade or your favorite store bought variety. The store bought kind won't be as good but they're easier to pack and you won't have a dirty pan to haul back home.

I also go the easy route.Stuff like chili you just have to reheat or store bought frozen lasagna and garlic bread is easy and easy clean up.We always bring some shrimp and boil them in water with some crab boil seasoning.Always a fish fry or 2 when we are up there.Nothing better than out of the lake and into the pan.

Gotta do surf and turf, every time! 24-hr. marinated T-bones on the little Weber grill, with deep fried walleye and fresh tartar sauce. I don't even go fishing unless I can eat this plate at least once.

Great breakfast and easy prep = breakfast tortillas. Browned breakfast sausage in seasoned scrambled eggs with melted cheese, onions and whatever else you like. Wrap it all in a warm tortilla and add a little salsa, mmmmmmmm.....

Easy breakfast is the easy omelettes... boil water and put your scrambled eggs and whatever you want in a ziploc bag. Boil for 10-15 minutes, cut the bag and out rolls an omelette. Little salsa and your good to go.

Lunchmeat and bread me boy for a mid day snack, and fish fry for dinner.

Dont get easier and less to pack than that.

Deer brats, pizza, pancakes. (mix done at home). For this you need hardly anything. Water, pan, bread, flat pan, syrup, butter, ketchup, mustard. (utencils) fits easy in a box. Of course, chips, peanuts, sandwhich meat. I think thats the easiest, but i like how these others think above! I got to try that rib idea!

Brats, pre-made soup and chili, deep fried fish, salsa and plenty of other dips for chips are our main fish house foods. Lipton pasta and rice sides and instant potatoes are also easy for the evening meals.

Dollar buns with a package of cheese and deer sausage are extremely easy day time snacks.

We've done breakfast burritos but I've never tried the boiling water omelet trick. Something new for this year's menu.

As mentioned, chili, steaks, fish, and snacks. Things that can be prepared in advance.

Each person brings a meal and a snack or three. I look forward to what each person brings. Some of the highlights from previous years, venison stew, deep fried bacon wrapped shrimp, homemade irish cream for coffee.

Tested my chili last night (made on Sunday). My ice fishing chili has less heat than normal due to the weekend diet of greasy foods and alcohol.

This year's chili, 3lb smoked chuck roast then cubed, 1/2 an Anaheim pepper, 1 pablano pepper, 2 jalapenos, 4 habaneros, 2 cans black beans, two cans of diced tomatoes. All peppers de-seeded for this trip.

Yes, my summer chili is considerably hotter.

I'm working on a surprise sauce for the eel pout, coconut milk with red curry. More sweet than spicy. It's actually a great crab recipe.

For snacks, besides the usual bags of chips and crackers, I'm adding ranch flavoring to pepperidge farm goldfish.

We were planning our trip this year and we were thinking of new ideas. Since we will have a generator this year, we were thinking of crock pot ideas and it reminded me of a trick I learned over the holidays. If you put one of those "oven bags" in your crock pot before you dump in your food, you just have to toss the bag out when your done. No scrubbing, no mess wink! No one likes to do dishes with limited water in the sleeper house.

For this week-end, I'm bringing wildrice hotdish & some meatballs and pasta sauce for sandwiches, with some melted cheese of choice on the bun too. I'm hoping there will be a fish-fry each evening!

Just got back and I'll tell ya the oven really was nice to have in the shack. We ended up doing venison with twice baked potatoes, fish fry with 4 cheese rice, and lasagna with garlic cheese bread. Pizzas and turkey/gravy over bread for lunches. Yum!!
