Pool 4 open water update.....farewell 2010!

Recommended Posts

I enjoyed a fun day on Pool 4 today, hosting the production crew from Northland Adventures TV. With only the heart of midday available to us for filming, we focused on the consistent vertical/plastic bite that has been in progress since early November. We are still using 3/8 oz silver or gold glitter heads from Deanstacklebox, tipped with 3" Trigger X minnows (pearl), 3" flukes, and 225 Paddletails. A nice mix of walleyes and saugers were had, fishing water 22-28 feet deep. Here's the crew from Northland Adventures TV at the end of our day.

The vertical bite was solid for most of the day...until the wind picked up and the sky clouded over. A couple of quick bait changes got us back on active fish, however. Here's a one-man limit from our trip today to give you an idea about the size distribution we're currently seeing....a lot of 14-17" fish. These fish will be the guests of honor at our New Year's dinner table.

After the camera crew boogied, I decided to stick around through duck to sample the dragging and wingdam pitching bite. One fish after a couple of dragging passes convinced me to break out the anchor and set up on my favorite wingdam instead. That was a great move: the last 45 minutes of the day saw 8 fish come to the boat, including this 20"+ fat-bottomed-girl. My wingdam recipe was chartreuse pepper or purple/chart tail ringworms from Deanstacklebox, rigged on 1/8 oz voodoo heads.

The Pool 4 bite has been great this winter, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Get out there and enjoy!

Good to see you on the water yesterday. We had similar luck as far as fish size was concerned. While the bite isn't hot, if you stayed with it you managed a few for the pan. I think our boat went home with seven fish for the fry pan.
