Cozumel Fishing.

I'm going in late Febuary, what type of fishing options are there? I have taken my take apart rod and reel kit to many place's in the carribian and Mexico, I was wondering if any one else had and what direction to go when I'm there. If not then it's rent a boat time.

Depends on what you want to spend. Theres a great sailfish bit in Feb.-march off Isla Mujeres, close to Coz., but the boats are pricey. Lots of American boats go down from Florida to fish then. Off the hook fishing if you hit it right.

Might be pricey, but definately worth the experience if you get a good boat and Captn. Caught some Sailfish in Islamorada FL in December and will definately be doing a similar trip again. The lakers this winter are going to seem a little lethargic after those battles.

Thanks for the info. I will more than likely book a super panga for a day or 2 , but I realy hope to find a spot to cast from shore or rent a Kyak and jig with a bid chrome blue swedish pimple. A 10 -15 pound cuda is a bigger fight than anything we have here.

I've never been to Cozumel, but whenever I shorefish the ocean, I've caught fun and interesting fish. When I've paid for charters, I have been disappointed.

Buy a block of squid and bottom fish. You'll have fun and spend about $10 on hooks, weights and bait.

You've been useing the wrong charters my friend:)

Hey, I love to shorefish, but when I get to an exotic locale, I'm not there to eat hamburger. Theres great steak out there, ya just gotta find it...:)

Agreed.

My only real successful experience on a charter was on Lake Michigan.

So far ocean fishing, I've logged 12 hours of charter time and have gotten 3 small barracuda in the boat. I got to reel one in. I know it is a small sample size, but every 4 hours of sitting and not catching feels like a punch in the gut.

In my non-charter ocean fishing, I've caught a lot of fish. At least 20 species. In tackle, licenses and bait, I've probably spent 10% of what those 3 barracudas cost me.

I'm sure you can do better if you get the right charter at the right time. I just can't refer you to anyone who can help.

I hear ya...I've spent plenty of fruitless hours on some charters over the years, but it's the successes that make them worth putting up with. Way I look at it, the bigger the prize, or fish, in this case, the more time and $$$ you're likely to spend.

Up to each angler to decide what he's willing to sacrifice for the cause:)

Well, it would be nice if an operator could guarantee you a bunch of fish. But I would not GO with a boat that promised that-not realistic. Best day we've had out of Cozumel....more toward the mainland side really, was 7 sailfish, five marlin, couple good tunas, three scary sized 'cudas and a batch of 4' long King fish. Good busy day and we've had other good days out there too.

Do some research. Look at a couple of the larger fishing trip booking agencies and see what they can do about a boat out of Cozumel. They won't be cheap. Later toward spring is better fishing for billfish

But you also CAN do some inshore fishing and have a blast. If you've never fished anywhere but the midwest, and you hook into a good 'cuda or snapper you'll see what REAL fishin' is all about!!! Ha!

Have fun.
