Deer Lake

Recommended Posts

Hit Deer on Sunday afternoon, man was it rough going. It took me an hour to go 200yds, didn't get to where I wanted to set up, but was worried I was going to have a heart attack if I kept going. The lake had 8" of snow on top of a good 10-12" of slush. It reminded me of the old tire drill we did in football high steping through it. We did catch three small 7" crappies in two hours. We fished that long just so I could catch my breath before the trek back. The ice was inconsistent, I had one spot with 10" others with just 6". I think it will be another week or more before I that again!

I have been out on the snowmobile the last couple of days and it's like that all over the lakes around here. Buffalo and Maple are both a real mess with lots of slush, nasty frozen ruts from sleds and ATV's, and many dead end ATV tracks where they got stuck. The SE end of Buffalo is mostly slushy with at least 12" of snow. There are some roads plowed here and there on Buffalo that could be useful. If you want to go exploring or find that out of the way spot, be prepared to deal with a foot of snow and several inches of slush underneath pretty much wherever you go.
