There's still lot's of time to go water fishing

Have you been out? <P>It would be nice to hear a report. How is the river? Are the ramps good (not ice covered)?

Posted

Yeah, let us know on the river and ramp conditions. I am finally getting to come up this week (thursday - saturday) and am really looking forward to some fishing. Is the bite in the river or still out past pine island?<P>Dean Thorn

Haven't been out but i plan to! Soon!! I would guess the bite is very close to the river or in it! Also after a few days of warmer weather like they are saying should help the ramps.

Hey Guys; I would certainly call first.. I talked to Brian Ney from Adrian's on Saturday and he said the river froze over Friday night and and he thought that 4 mile bay also was frozen.. He also said that he chopped a hole and it made 1 1/2 inches in one night, it was -15 at Wheelers. Now with the warmer temps, it may reopen, but call first!!...Kaz

Yep, you folks contemplating the boat fishing better call. I took a putz around the south shore from Warroad over to Wheelers yesterday. River at the KOA and Wheelers access' were covered in ice. Looking out onto 4mile from Wigwam the bay looked to be iced up all the way with maybe a patch of openwater near where the green can sits. As Widetrack mentioned the Warroad river is ice out onto the lake maybe a 1/4 mile. From the top of the ob. tower at the Warroad access it looked like ice from the access area all the way up to springsteel.<P>I took some pics and if I can figure how to post them here I will. Don't hold your breath as I'm basically computer illiterate!<P>Regards....Fisky

Fisky, any info on thickness of the ice you saw? Is there a chance that will diminish in the next couple days with warm and wind. What I wouldn't give to get out there one more time....Any ice updates on the angle? Other than the webcam?<P>------------------<BR>Hemlock<BR>"Throw'm back"

I put my full weight [girthy!] on the ice by the Wheelers ramp and it did'nt crackle! Maybe 2 inches or so? Looked like it would be hard on a boat to bust it up anyways. Hard to say what'll happen to it, the overnite lows are still looking to be under the freeze mark thru the week anyways. I'm ready for some icefishing myself!<P>fiskyknut

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
