I and 2 brothers are looking to make a first time fishing trip to LOW this year. Any advice on when, where, bait, bring house or rent, would be appreciated. Friends at work rave over LOW. 300 mile drive, one way. It would be nice to come back with a few fillets.
Thanks
------------------
bubblehead

Hey Rookie! Welcome to the site. You should take a peek at a post titled 'things to do on the big pond', it's down this LOTW forum page a ways. It's a posting of mine from a couple winters back that touches on fishing options around the lake thru the winter season.
Check that out first and then you can come back for some more specifics.
A 'few fillets' usually is'nt a problem up here!!!
Regards.....fiskyknut

rookie-8, Welcome to Fishing Minnesota!
I would have to agree with fisky, a few filets shouldn't be a problem. A lot of places to go out of and they do a good job putting you on fish.
Good Fishin,
Matt
[email protected]
Catch-N Tackle
MarCum

Rookie: Four years ago on a referral from one of my clients I started to fish LOW. It has honestly been one of the best expierances of my ice fishing life. I gurantee if you come once you will come up again. I have stayed at the same resort on every trip and have been treated just great. I make at least 4 trips per year now and I understand the drive time as its 4 1/2 hours for us as well. But believe me it is well worth the travel time. Once things get rockin' up there the guys on this site will be chock full of information, tips and lure selection. I really hope you make that first trip because I know you'll be back. Good luck and hang on Bill Turck St Cloud

Okay,
many of these resorts offer packages with angling houses shallow or deep. Could someone explain that one for me. Is this two different bites, and which is which? Please elaborate. Is it that way the whole season or part of it?
------------------
bubblehead

Rookie-8 not to woory the resorts on LOW all try to put there houses over schools of fish.
The reason for the houses in two deeps is the saugers stay in the deeper water and the walleyes have a good bite shallow but most times only during the two peak time (sun up and sundown). We go up the third week of december and are usally in about 23 28 feet of water, we will pick up a few walleyes and a number of saugers. Have a great trip. If you get out to pick a few things up for your trip make sure you get a few things in gold colors they are always the best for us. Just a plain 1/8 oz. ball head jig.
Have fun and let us now how you do.
Sifty

They have the shallow as mentioned above, and the shallows for the pike fishing. And I believe most of the resorts have dark houses for spearing. I go up in Jan Every year.

Rookie do you know where you will be staying and what dates in December you will be there? I'll be going up the first trip on Dec 28th. We will be at Riverbend Resort which is one of many on Wheelers Point.
Thanks for the help if I get to ottertail. I have never fished it but have heard some great reports. Good luck and hang on. Bill,
We will be up there by around noon on the 26th, and staying through the evening bite on the 28th. We will be staying in the house we built over the summer. I have been reading a lot on here, and talking to an uncle I have who has lived his whole life on the lake in Warroad, and it looks like we will be Just past pine Island, access through wheeler's point. Our house is tan with a sky blue horizontal stripe at window level, and a black rubber roof. Pulling it with a Dodge ram 1/2 ton. Stop in if you spot us, we should have collected the latest info by then, and maybe some good pictures of fish and a few eaters.
Good Luck
George

RookIe: Will try to stop and say howdy. We fish out of Riverbend houses and they are just past Pine at that time of year in anywhere from 25-30' of water depending on the ice conditions. We will arrive about 1030AM on the 28th and should be in your area by 1130AM to 1200PM. Last year with good ice and lack of snow we drove out ourselves. In the past however we did go out with their track vehicles. Lets hope the ice gods are friendly to us this year. Hope you have a great trip and throw a few back for us.
couple more weekends of deer hunting, and one more trip to South Dakota to chase the long tails and then serious hard water time. Good luck and hang on. Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
