Any updates on The Keg? Stuck in the "Twidies" and just living vicariously through these posts. 1.5 weeks and I'll be there to punch some holes in the lake (assuming quality ice).

I would figure things are shaping up nicely with this cold. Not quite as cold as forecasted, but the cloud cover seems to be keeping the temps up.

Stick- If we don't get much snow things should be in fair shape by the time you get up here. goin out today to check more locations on keg - will post later.

Was out this morning about 3/4 the way down wendigo arm. 5 inches of ice where we were with a couple of fish to clean. Snowing this morning with some wind- hope its enough wind to take the snow off the lake and keep makin ice. seen a couple dark houses along the shoreline break.

Thanks for the report hookset. Pokey's a great fishery. Really don't know why I don't fish it more than I do?

Hookset have u ventured out by sheer's bar or drumbeater checking ice yet? I'm movin the house tomorrow, got skunked 2 days in a row. Plus I have an unwelcome, too freindly neighbor, with a portable who thinks all the fish in the lake are hiding right under my house.

Vos - haven't been out that far yet - no need to yet. Give me a call and we will chat or i can tell you lies for awhile. Yesterdays snow made some slush in some spots. Found a little open crack this morning 6-8 in. wide. Causes a little panic to an old guy. Be careful out there!

Haha well, I don't go out looking for lake pigs, but I won't be afraid to tell someone to have some respect either.

I pulled my house out between nesbit and drumbeater today. There is not near as much ice out there. I would say about 4-5 inches. Going fishin early and I am exited!

Was out spearing on sat and where I was set up there was only 4-5" of ice but it was good clear ice. I have my permanant house out but thought we would try another spot about 200yds away, we got set up by 830 and by 1130 we had seen 5 northerns and some jumbo perch. Speared 4 2-3lbs, 1-5lbs and 1-8.5lbs. So it wasnt to bad of a morning.

Buddys are on the other end of the lake and a guy next to them got a 10lb eye and they managed to get a few in the 3lb range. Plan on spending alot more time in the house this weekend.

Is there much for snow on the ice? Just wondering how insulated the lake is from the nice cold temps right now.

There was very little snow on the lake. Probably some decent snow on parts of the shorelines but where I was set up thas only a couple inches. I wouldnt doubt if there is 8" of ice out where I was at by this sat.

Haven't been over by mishawaka for some time but i haven't seen 8 inches of ice yet anyplace i've been. About 6 1/2 inches so far but not much snow and cold temps has had the ice bangin like crazy- felt like a couple of waves this mornin when it popped. Did anybody see this sunrise this AM that looked like 3 suns?

Cory - I was thinkin that the areas that froze up around thanksgiving probably have all of 8 inches cause there was almost 6 inches acouple weeks ago- Just thought you might be in one of those areas.

What is the maximum and minimum ice thickness being seen now on Pokegama? Just curious if things are pretty well ready all over (as "ready" as ice can be as you always have to exercise caution).

saw a Toyota Tundra in the middle of the lake (in between Seagren's and King's Point) tonight on my way back through the bridge. So I guess we're pretty close....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
