I need someone to hunt with

Hey all,

I am new to deer hunting, but I have been working with a mentor of sorts for the last year.

I completed hunter education earlier in the month and now I am looking to hunt with someone. The few hunters I know are hunting private land with no room in their parties. I was looking at hunting public land but I am not comfortable doing that.

I have been taught how to be very safe with a gun so if someone would like to take a noob out on November 6th, I'd appreciate it. We could have a beer well beforehand to make sure everyone feels safe with the situation.

I can be reached at jeffreydimmer-at-yahoo

yeah it gets pretty tough to get on private land unless you know a person really well. I had to pretty much become part of the family to hunt where i do now. Dont discount all public land you can search around and find some good stuff but you have to be willing to get away from the metro you can find good land

Thanks guys. I will still consider public land, perhaps I just need to do some good scouting. Maybe I'll get lucky and tag along with someone experienced. I'd even love just the experience of seeing a deer taken and dressed.

Keep trying, make some drives and find some areas that look good for deer habitat. Go pound on doors and ask them if you can hunt there, and upon them letting you if you get a deer tell them you will give them whatever they want from what you get made.

letsgofishin, I'd be willing to go pretty far north. I have taken the 5th off of work. Do you have a lead?

I knocked on some doors Sunday but understandably no one was interested. I just politely said I understood and went on my way.

Don't let it get you down. For every 20 doors you knock on. one might say yes. You do not know until you try.

beware telling them your a first time hunter might make or break you.

Some might see it as they have to worry about you, others might see it as, lets get this guy a deer!

I thought of that, pureinsanity! Some won't care that I completed the DNR's hunter education course (despite being born before 1980) and I have to understand their concerns.

I have done a little hunting before, but I never got close enough to shoot at a deer. I just don't have A LOT of experience.

if you are willing to go north check some of the state land up north there is tons of it and yeah there will be lots of hunters but its very easy to get away from them and have some good land to yourself just have to look. Plus google maps and bing you can zoom in pretty good to check areas out, thats what i have done with out of state land for scouting.

Another consideration would be to not take Friday off but instead take of Monday or take off another day during the week after opening weekend. Last year I hunted opening weekend on state land around pine city with my wife's family along with enough other hunters you could see orange everywhere you went (within vicinity of a road). Then I went over to some land about 30 minutes from Mille Lacs and hunted another parcel of state land all week long. Maybe saw one person Monday, nobody Tuesday and Wednesday and then a group pulled in Thursday night that was coming to hunt 2nd weekend. It was quiet and nobody around during middle of the week though.

I hunt with a group that has 2 people out this year, so it's a possibility if you are interested in hunting waaay up North by Blackduck. We hunt in the Chippewa Natl Forest, public land. Let me know if interested and I can ask the guys, in fact one lives in EP, I grew up in Tonka.

Just one verification though, you did say Jeffrey Dimmer and not Jeffrey Dahmer right, that's a different story|

Jdime,

Kudos to you for taking the initiative to ask complete strangers and taking on the risk of going with others that you don't know. Just be careful and do your part to participate in fuel for heat, food, and the unexpected duties in order to pull your weight.

Just remember you might be a safe hunter in the woods but your party might not be so fresh on gun safety and/or rules...alcohol and guns don't mix.

Sorry to sound like my old man but I have ran into to many "happy hunters" during shooting hours.

Good luck,

mr

Funny you say that as it is a concern of mine that I've already brought up. So far it sounds like the people I've connncted with are safe as well. There's a vetting process on both sides.

I know several people who bring brandy with them to the stand, or drink before they go out to the stand. Why???

I also know people that bring brandy or coffee mixed with something to the stand with them. I have done it and still do but i ONLY have A shot and a cig after the kill.I wait until all work is done and then it's on. .There are "bad apples" out there but dont put everyone in the same boat.I do agree the "party" belongs at camp..Just my 2 cents..

The DNR will want you to party at camp as well. What is the fine for having alcohol with you in the stand? Anyone know. Can it cause revocation of your license?
