I don't know what else to call it. I'm talking about setting the hook and the line on your reel peels off the reel before catching. I've heard that it can be caused by closing the bail with the handle instead of manually but I'm not so sure. I run all Stradics and it seems to be more prominent when trolling spinners and setting the hook on a bigger fish. Is this a Shimano thing, a maintenance issue, Anyone else noticing this?

How full is your spool from the top, what line test, weight, make, are you using, and do you have the anti-reverse engaged?

On the reel it happens on most I'm running 20# PowerPro at least an 1/8th inch from the rim of the spool. Although I've had it happen on 8# Fireline also. Anti-reverse is always engaged.

The fast taper on Shimano Static spools that also allows for the line to spool off more freely is likely the cause of the braids slipping off on the hook-set. See if it lessens if your spool is less full once?

Lighter rigs that do not put much line tension on the braid while wrapping may also be causing a loose wrap on the spool, allowing it to puke off on the set.

You may wish to also try to reel up just enough to add tension as your line on the hook set, that should add enough tension to eliminate the loops spilling off the spool.

Mark make sure that when you close the bail the line is in the line roller good. At times when it doesnt get in there good on my Shimanos it will do the same. I think at times the bail springs on Shimano reels are on the light side.

my guess is the bail is slightly bent.. causing it not to close all the way.. I would send them into shimano for service.

The only time this will happen to me is when the line is not line roller as stated above. When i set the hook, it will open up the bail. I've done that enough times that i always look to see the line is in the line roller.

Ditto for me on this as well.

I've noticed some reels will do that once in a while when the line isn't in the roller.

How easily does the bail flip?

If its doing it a lot then I think your bail is bent or the spring is weak.

Happened to me...slightly bent bail cost me a lot of walleyes.
