Zipple Bay Resort Winter Ice Questions

Recommended Posts

I don't know if Zipple Bay Resort is active on this site....but maybe someone else can assist me with these basic questions. I know I can call them, but I just wanted to put "early feelers" out as we get closer to the hard water season.

I stored my permenant ice house at Zipple Bay....is there a guess when they think there will be enough ice to stage shacks just off shore?

Is there an annual road pass I can purchase? I plan on coming up alomost every weekend to fish.

Is there anyone up there that can move my ice shack around for me. (plowing me out of any trouble, or setting me up at a different spot when I am coming up...etc) I am NOT expecting a free service, but want to just know who I would need to talk to about this.

Thanks in advance for any help or direction in me finding my answers.

CAN'T WAIT FOR ICE FISHING!!!!!

Nick at Zipple bay can answer all your questions but,for now, They will stage shacks in the bay to be brought out when called, they will offer a day pass each day, dont know about a annual pass, but its just a quick stop in to say hi an buy the day pass. Nick an his staff will do the moving an plowing out of when called early enough with a heads up. But you really need to call Zipple bay resort. I gotta question for ya, been working on trying to get my avatar up, have a picture on phot bucket but must missing a few steps. can ya help me thru this? later boar

they will pull it out in the open if you need to work on it if they have room.other wise they will put it on the bay when they think its safe enough.i guess it depends on if you pull it out on the lake or if zipple does.but you could call Nick when the time is right.

Not to jack the thread, but we are thinking of coming up there for the first time and staying at Zippel Bay. We would sleep in one of the newer cabins and then rent a day house. We have been going to Winnie, but are thinking about switching it up this year.

Anybody have any feedback on Zippel Bay and their operation? We are thinking of coming up mid to late January, what can we expect for action that time of year? The other option looks to be mid to late March, but not sure if that is getting too late in the season for what we want to do or not.

Any feedback/insight would be appreciate.

zippel bay would be a great place to go. Their new cabins are gorgeous and spacious. They are doing some remodeling of their lodge during the "transition period" and you can't forget the igloo bar out on the ice!!!

I am a HUGE fan of Zipple Bay. The people are very friendly and helpful. You will POUND fish in late January!

I had my Ice House on Winnie for most of last year....and bringing it to Lake of the Woods was the BEST decision I have ever made. For the additional drive time...it is soooooo worth it for the quality of fishing.

You won't be dissappointed. The road conditions in late March can get poor if the weather gets warm, but usually things are still ok.

Was at Zipple Bay the middle of February. Can't say enough good about them. Had an absolute blast and will be booking another trip with them this winter. Going to go a little earlier in the season. Fishing was a little slow for us, but we still caught enough to keep us happy. It's a great place and great people. You will not be disappointed.

They do have an annual pass, it was $100 bucks the last two years. And yes they will plow you out if you need it and plow a new spot for you, it will cost you a few bucks though. They usually have 2 or 3 plows out there and all you have to do is flag one of them down and tell them what you want.

Made a change and went to Zipple last year and we all loved it. The new cabins are great and the igloo bar is very cool. I like how you don't have to ride a bomber to get to the shack. That way if you want to run back to the cabin quick you can, and you can load up your truck with everything you could possibly want on the ice too.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

Here is my new question...i have two friends from Missouri coming up the week after Christmas to fish for the week and bring in the New Year on the ice!

The closer we get, the more nervous I am that the ice will be ok to get the sleeper house on.....do you guys think I will be ok?

Thanks again for all the replies...and I can't WAIT for the LOW Ice Fishing Season!

I don't think you will have a problem at all, I always plan on the weekend before Christmas. Thats when I head up and get everything all set for the family to come up to spend Christmas. So the week after you shouldn't have no problem.

We have gone up to URL the last 3 years the weekend after christmas with no problems... So LOW should be fine.

So how has the fishing been on the URL during your trips? Did you use / rent a sleeper or go out of a resort to day houses?

We actually have wheel houses. The fishing has been fine, and I am taking my family up there again this christmas time. But for our Annual boys only trip in Jan, we are ditching URL and heading to LOW. A few of my buddies have been up there before, and the they said LOW is much better during the day.

Sounds like zipple has a nice operation. I think we're going to plan on going through them this winter. We'll be renting a sleeper, does anyone have any thoughts on the quality of their sleepers? We went to Red last year and had a awesome sleeper. I can't find any pictures of zipples shacks, any thoughts?

Zipple runs a good operation.Rented from them a couple years ago and it happened to be -40 below and fishing was slow. However they were still out there moving houses and checking on people.Even warmed up another house for us to try while they moved the one we were in to another location. Not sure on how there sleepers are but their on shore accomadations are nice and clean.

Most resorts on LOW great just depends on what kind of expierience you are looking for.I dont care for the bomber rides as you are stuck out on the lake and prefer to drive out on a road.Ill be headed up there for 4 days right after New Years.

Brad how was the fishing on Red and who did you use for the sleeper rental?

We went out of Battle River Rentals. I think we had a 10*20 wheelhouse that was very nice. It was almost brand new. Jerry and his kid did a good job checking in on us many times/day. They were willing to move us but we were doing pretty good on eyes. The 3 days we caught about 60-70. If we end up doing a 2nd trip in Feb. we're going to go through them again.

My buddies and I have been doing our annual hard water New Years trip out of Zipple for the last years 5 years and have had a great time and caught fish. I stay there 3 to 4 times every ice season. Some times we use their houses other times our portables. They have always treated us great and we think they run a first class operation.

Thanks to everybody that answered my question. They didn't have availability when we wanted to go (late Jan), so we are going mid Feb instead. (Its hard making everybody's schedule fit with resort availability as well!!) Hope the fishing doesn't stink!!

Seems like a cool place and I can't wait to have a drink at the Igloo bar!!!

Thanks again!

My 2 cousins and myself just finished up a windy 4 day trip to our favorite lake. It was the last of the year and was eventful to say the least. When we arrived, water temperatures were 61 degrees and when we left yesterday morning the water temps had dropped to 54 degrees. The fishing was fantastic, once again, and we caught walleyes, bass, and northerns on minnows and crawlers(northerns only on minnows). We found the fish adjacent to shallow rock piles(14') in 20'-28' of water. Our best fishing hours of the day were ~5:30 -twilight in the evenings and until ~ 10:30 in the mornings. Although those two time periods were prime time, fish bit all day. For us, the bite was very light and we probably missed or lost as many fish as we caught. Some people think I'm nuts when I say bead color can make a difference and it certainly did this trip. My cousin's "go to" green/white bead combo did zilch on this trip. It was one translucent red bead and a plain size #2 gamakatsu hook with a 3' leader that produced the fish. We ended up with 137 walleyes and 19 bass for the 4 day outing. We caught far more 17"-19.999" walleyes on this trip than on our previous trips and our numerous slot fish measured from 21"-25". My younger cousin caught 4 slot fish in ~20 minutes one evening. We fish exclusively for walleyes and additional species are incidental. With that said, we caught some beautiful smallmouth bass on this trip and they were right down there with the walleyes, usually in the rocks. As usual, everything is catch and release except for the fish we eat while there and the 12 walleyes(3 individual limits) we take home to the wives. While cleaning some eaters we kept for supper, we always check the stomach contents. One of the walleyes had the jig that is pictured below loose in its stomach!  No attached line, no embedded hook, just the jig! It baffled us as to how in the world it could have gotten there . As you can see, the jig is in good shape so the fish must have swallowed it recently .   The boat traffic was minimal this trip and we had a couple days where it looked as if we had the lake to ourselves. Sunday was a brutal day with wind gusts to 50MPH!. We stayed in and ventured out finally at ~5:00. It turned out to be the best 2 hours of the entire trip. This time, the baby loons were around, the eagles were abundant, the changing leaves made the entire lake area look like a painting. If I could make only one short trip a year to the lake, now would be the time. What capped off the trip was the magnificent display of the Northern Lights. We can't wait for next spring to return, God willing, and, in the meantime, good fishing.  MarkB🙂 The jig found in the stomach of a walleye we ate.   My young cousin with his best of the trip.   a chunky 17" smallmouth   19.5" smallmouth

What an amazing extended weekend. The fish were happy and cooperated nicely.   We also had the unique experience of fishing under Northern Lights each of the last three nights in pristine weather conditions.  I wish everyone could have that experience, even if just once.  The pics below don't do it justice, though you get the idea.  The walleyes are putting on the feedbag and some are getting rather plump.  We caught mostly slot fish with several 'overs' in our bag.  Our two biggest weighed 8lbs 5oz and 8lb 3oz.     The crappies were active at dusk and beyond.  Almost all of the ones we caught were 14" or bigger.  The biggest we caught was a bit over 15".  We lost two muskies at the boat and caught a 38" pike after dark - quite surprising.   Every fish we caught was immediately released btw.  Water temp 54/55 when we left.  All-in-all, another great fishing experience on Lake Vermilion - for which I'm so incredibly appreciative.

The price and the label.  It's that same exact gas.

I don't use gas anymore, what's the difference between them?

Great to hear from you again Mark! I've always liked your posts over the years.

Yep, it's just you know and I know every dad who takes his kids or family camping for the first time.  Is buying the camping gas no matter the cost, cuz it says "Camping" on it! 🤭🤭
