I use fathead minnows. More important is the location you're fishing. If it's a good community spot, then there will be plenty of other boats around. If you're very good, then you'll want to get away from the crowds and find your own fish elsewhere. Bigger shiners are better, but I don't want to spend the extra.

Don't feel bad, I fish there a lot, and I've caught 2 walleyes on the Croix all year--and one was on a chug bug. The smallies, sturgies, and crappies keep me coming back. I keep trying for 'eyes, though, I know I'll get it figured out one of these times. Last weekend we did our share of sheep herding, managed 1 big crappie, a sauger, a pike, and a small flathead.

try fishing out front of the kinnie, it's located about half way

between prescott and hudson. there are three bouys marking the main

channel and I've been just hammering walleyes and saugers off the

middle bouy, right in front of the kinnie in about 15ft of water.

for lures I prefer a shad rap and a drop shot rig system.

worms also work but you tend to catch a lot of drummies at times

and you can't go wrong with the old minnow and a jig.full-34906-2237-thecroix007.jpg

I have only been fishing the river for walleyes since last year and it can be a real pain. Hang in their and you will get some.

Keep on plugging away, you will get there. I would have to agree with the shad raps, also with the jig and minnow. Find the bottom and you will find fish.

I started fishing the river about 5 years or so ago ad I'm still learning. Fishing the river can be very exciting and also very humbling

Just got to stick with it

Not plugging an ad for him but I took a tour out with Riverdan a few years back. Most folks would have just fish. My goal was to learn every thing i possibly could from the guy, his techniques and ideals ect when it came to river fishing and let me tell ya i learned allot.

Maybe something like this could be another option for ya

Just a thought.. but like every one else pretty much said.. find a nice community spot, fill your live wells up then venture out

how fast were you trolling? trying to get into trolling on the rivers but now sure how to account for trolling with or against the current.. normally troll 1.9-2.1 on lakes... do i go a little slower trolling up river and a little faster going down?
