Columbia Heights

Sounds like my office is moving to Columbia Heights in the next few months. Any idea if there are fish in Sullivan Lake? I know there is no access, but might be fun to go down there on break!

Cecil:

I lived in the Heights for many years I grew up there, and now live in Fridley. No, Sullivan Lake has no fish in it and has not had any in it since the 1950's. Trust me. I grew up about 5 blocks away from there. As a kid I used to shoot bow and arrow for turtles along the shore.

These days the lake is more of a drainage for the houses that completley surround the Lake.

If you are seeking a good fishing place in the area try Long Lake in New Brighton. Just head East on 694 until you come to the Long Lake Road exit. Get off 694 and head up the exit ramp. When you come to the top take a left and go across the over pass. Take the second right hand road (the first is the exit of 694 for the West bound lane and you would therefore be driving on the wrong side of the road). Turn Right on the Second road next to the apartment building and along the west bound freeway sound barrier and go east till you come to the lake.

There is a boat landing and a fishing pier there. The landing has a large parking lot and is connected via a walking path to the Ramsey County Park and beach on the North East side of Long Lake.

Long Lake has Walleyes, Huge Northern Pike, a nice collection of Crappies, Sunfish, Bass, Carp, and Catfish. Rice Creek, which starts around Forest Lake and flows thro8ugh a chain of lakes and finally ends up in the Mississippi River in Fridley runs into and out of Long Lake.

Long lake can be fun. Last time I was there a bunch of Pike were topfeeding along shore... I was on the east end of the narrows casting from shore in the park. That was tricky, if on a break I'd just hit up the pier. There are plenty of fish in that lake so you should have a nice time.
