Icehouse Bob

Gentlemen, I regret I must bring you bad news about my father Bob Pansch, the man you know as Icehouse Bob. On 10 November he was cutting a tree when it snapped funny and caught him in the side of the head. It crushed a number of his facial bones, fractured his left femur and gave him a spinal contusion. To cut a long story short he has been in the hospital since then, his face and leg have been pinned and healing fine his spine however is not. The doctors think he will never walk again and that at best may be able to use his arms enough to control a power chair. He is finally breathing on his own though is still taking his food from a tube through his stomach. He has recovered from pneumonia and has had a fever more often than not (they can’t seem to pin down what is causing it). He is able to talk again though his mind is not all there. Very little of what he says has any basis in reality. We are currently hoping that it is dementia due to him being in bed and disoriented for so long and not some sort of brain damage. We eventually hope to get him home but he will have get over his reoccurring fever, hopefully enough physical therapy to use a power chair, and a little remodeling of the house better accommodate his needs.

Well, that is pretty much it. I know how much he liked this group, both online and at the Cool Cats event so I wanted to let you guys know. Sorry I didn’t let you know sooner but there were other things to deal with. If there are any changes to his condition I will try to let you all know. Otherwise my email is blacksmithingyeti at gmail dot com (making the obvious changes/substitution to make it a legit address) if you need anything.

Respectfully,

Martin Pansch

What horrible news Martin. frown My heart just sank a bit. I had a bad feeling when I noticed that Bob hadn't been posting here at all and making plans to bring his kitchen out.

Please let him know we are thinking of him and I know he will be in all our thoughts during Cool Cats.

His presence was a highlight of the event and will be missed.

Best wishes to him and your family.

I personally do not know Bob, but I've been hearing lots of talk about him and this event. This is bad new to have happen to anyone or their loved ones. I will be thinking of you and your family!

I have to admitt, when I heard this and told my wife, tears came to my eye. I've know Bob as long as I have been a member on this site. He's a great guy and I always look forward to seeing him and his famous beans! wink

I'm praying for your recovery Bob.

Thanks for the information Martin. I just feel horrible for Bob and his family.

I've had an uneasy feeling and had concerns that something may have happen to our friend Bob due to his long inactivity here but hoped that I was wrong. We usually are together planning for Cool Cats by this time and I wasn't able to get in contact with him.

Let me know if there is anything I can do other than keeping Bob and his loved ones in my prayers.

Bob is in our prayers. Hopefully he will shake off the fever and return to normal mentally. Sure would be nice to at least see him able to hold a fishing rod. I've seen some amazing things done by Capable Partners.

I am pretty sure catfish palooza is being held on Long lake and is being put on by the city of Richmond. Kind of funny the two events are on the same day.

Yes the timing is a bummer. Hadn't heard a thing about it until last week. I'll be in contact with them this year to see if we can avoid future conflicts if they are going to have it again.

I believe half the fun in these events is the chatting with all who attend.

Then, there is Borch's fish fry that is awesome.

One of the best attended and put together events all year.

Looking for some help.

If someone could bring a couple garbage cans with bags. I will bring a couple tables, a fish fryer, batter and oil.

We will also be doing a short "Cats Through the Ice" seminar starting about 7:15 am for those who would be interested. It will be a hands on seminar focused on getting folks off to a good start lasting 20-30 minutes.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

I don't think I'll be able to attend this event but I'm curious about the parking situation, are people planning to drive out to the fishing grounds or is there going to be a shuttle service??

I was out at the meth hole last weekend and it was fine and drivable. hopefully next week it should still be okay. there was 24"+ of ice.

We should be fine with parking on the ice as long was we don't get dumped on again before the event.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
