Help Me Kill em

Hey guys,

I have a problem with coyotes on my farm in northern mn. My Dad and brother have been seeing what we think are young coyotes (40lbers) everytime they sit for whitetails(not seeing deer). My Dad had 5 of them come by him this morning.

If we whack one with a rifle are they going to leave the area? or just go nocternal?

How do we go about killing as many as possible right out of the gate?

I know they are very difficult to kill once they know they are being hunted. The only experience I have with killing them is while turkey hunting and have one come into my calling.

thanks guys

Your best bet is to get someone in there that knows how to trap & snare them....an efficient trapper can devistate a pack of young ones early in the year in just a nite or two...when I was trapping, we liked to gang set an area we knew held a litter of fox or yotes that hadn't dispersed yet...it wasn't uncommon to find 4-5, or even as many as 6 critters in the traps in a single section when we returned the next day...but you gotta know what you're doing...you can try calling too but if you get four or more coming at once what are your odds of picking them all off?? You may get a couple but the rest will be educated...have someone trap them and then you can get on the calls if there are any left!

I would agree that there are people out there that will hunt them, but once they have been called to and shot at, they get educated quickly. Trapping will thin that really quickly and effeciently. Stop at the local Co-op and ask there for guys (or gals) who trap, they will know who to get a hold of

If you are seeing many "young" 40 lb coyotes, they are more than likely smaller than that or wolves. A young of the year wolf would be around the 40-50 lb range and a young of the year coyote is around 25 lbs or so.

Thanks guys,

My Dad went out there with a buddy and an e-caller and killed one with a shotgun. He had a lot of fun with that. We will chip away at them when we can and get after them this winter.

If anyone wants to come out to my place after deer season they are more than welcome to come and trap and hunt the yotes I have running round. We have an abundance of wild game on our land plus our domesticated critters and I'm getting sick and tired of seeing clumps of feathers of pheasants, turkeys, and our ducks and chickens everywhere. I can even provide some bait for them if needed.

My grandfather has a similar problem except they are killing his sheep and goats. Our solution was to snare them and leave them in the snare on a fence post then set foot traps around it in a twenty foot circle. Usually caught a couple more after a week or so. Coyotes are pests and there numbers need to go down severely!

You may have some Fox mixed with the yotes taking out some of the yard birds. But they trap just as well! smirk

kingkobbla, lots of guys use shotty's, and you can use anything from 00 Buck to a BB, BBB, T, F... I shot 2 a couple of years ago with Black Cloud BB. Both were at around 20-30 yards, facing me.

Dead coyote by heavi shot is an excellent load with the right choke. So i have heard. Ive killed them with 4 shot lead before but they were within 30 yards.
