College Hockey This weekend

I wonder if Michigan Tech will make it to the final five this year. Like Bear said there is always at least one surprise every year.

I thought UNO look good but its tough to say how Minnesota will do this year. They made a nice come back towards the end of the game. You could sense the disappointment from the crowd, announcers and players at the end of the game.I never seen Woogerjust at a lost for words for the post game show. I'm a UND fan and I want Lucia out of there. He's a frricking disgrace to the rest of the league. I don't want my teams rival being Michigan Tech or UNO. Is there anyone out there who thinks he should stay?

Just what the WCHA needed. Another mediocre squad from Minnesota. Cute club Bemidji. What's next for the league after accepting a glorified junior college? Dunwoody got a team?

I didn't get to see the games this weekend but I am not surprised at the results, even after the sweep last weekend I just didn't have any confidence in our swiss cheese D. The forwards at least putting some pucks in the nets but this isn't the start we needed. I have said all along I think this is Lucias make or break year, its still early so I am not going to turn to the dark side yet but after the past few seasons it won't take much for the pitch forks and torches to come out.

I still say bad coaching. How to you go down 4-0 and 3-0, thats embarrassing.

I am still unsure how goo dor bad the Gophs will be. One thing I guarantee is that this team will beat good teams this year. Barribal and Cepis have the ability to put a few in per game. The team will be inconsistent.

Fire Lucia,

Bemidji will THROTTLE the Gophers come March!!!!! Bad enough that a no name team from Nebraska could do it! (Didn't Bemidji also win a game at Marriuci last year, and sweep the Duluth Bulldogs AND beat the #1 Miami of Ohio in North Dakota over X-mas last year?....... AND are only 2 years removed from the Frozen Four? YEP!)

Bemidji battled with UND (who is suppose to be one of the best in the WCHA) for most of both games, the score doesn't indicate the competitiveness.....

I think Bemidji has more NCAA wins and Frozen Four appearances then St. Cloud, Mankato, Alaska, & Omaha combined. I might be wrong on the NCAA wins thing but still for a young/small program they have already accomplished a lot, hardly a community college.

Bemidji is a great program, no doubt. I do think it will be a little tougher playing other WCHA teams every week. The good news is they will be even better prepared for the NCAA's when they qualify.

  • 2 weeks later...

Weekend predictions anyone?

Minnesota State at Alaska Anchorage

Michigan Tech at Wisconsin

Denver at North Dakota

Minnesota at Colorado College

Minnesota Duluth at Bemidji State

Quinnipiac at St. Cloud State

I say split, split (out on a limb for loss-less Tech), No Dak sweep, split, UMD sweep, and St Cloud sweep.

I was a little off on my predictions. I think the only fans that are happy with the way there team played this weekend is Minnesota. The WCHA record against other conferences isn't too good this year. That will hurt some of our teams overall power rankings.

I was off too. I'm happy with 3 of 4 from Bemidji at the new Brec. UMD seems to struggle against BSU. Great series coming up with UND UMD!

Should be a good series your your Bulldogs Solbes. i figured that UND would be playing alot better than they have been. There goaltending is not good this year and the defense is caught out of position, leaving guys in front of the net alone helpfully they get it fix or I will have to own up to my little wager.

How does your team look this year so far. You could be rank #1 or 2 on Monday with the Boston College lost this weekend.

UND will start playing iron tough come holiday time. Can almost set your clock by it. Getting Genoway back this year is huge.

UMD is playing pretty well so far, but they still have yet to see a great opponent. I would put Fontaine+Connolly^2 against any other top line in the country. JT Brown is playing out of his mind for a freshman, so I think we're all pleased with that. Our goalie Brady Hjelle who split time last year left, the team so it's all Kenny Reiter. Powerplay continues to play well. But this seems to be a team that can be intimidated, so it'll be interesting to see how they play at the Ralph.

Lots of splits this past weekend. I was happy to see the Dogs come out of Grand Forks with 2 points. I think we were 1-10-1 in our previous 12 games there. I watched Friday's game on tape delay Saturday. They played well the first period, and then kind of backed off for the next period in a half. Penalty within the last two minutes killed any chances for tieing it up.

Nebraska Omaha has to be the surprise so far. 4-0 coming out of the gate in the WCHA is a great way to start your program.

Big series for next week appears to be Wisconsin v. No Dak. St Cloud may have their hands full playing UNO at home as well.

Apologize for replying to myself here again, but I don't see the edit button. If you didn't watch the Sioux Bulldog game on Saturday, check out the sweet behind the back pass from Mike Connolly to Fontaine to setup the winner. Nice...

My Huskies are not living up to expectations. I had pretty high expectations as well.

Too many splits, not helping themselves or the WCHA.

Give those Huskies some time. I think the formula for winning in this league is to hold off your peak play until after the Holiday break. Please beat those streaking UNO guys this weekend!

I am surprised that the Huskies are not doing better. Sioux are about where I thought they would be. Another roller coaster in the making. Hopefully they arent on the way down immediate after the WCHA tourny, like usual. I am pheasant hunting in ND this weekend, I better not bash em.

I am surprised by UNO, but I think they will fall some.

Gophs and UMD are right about as I expected too.

Easy for you to say Solbes, the Dogs are looking very good right now!!!

But yes, I remember too many years where the Huskies looked unbeatable in Dec./Jan only to limp into the playoffs by March.

Predictions again for this weekend? Hoping to improve over my last effort:

Mich Tech vs Minn Duluth: Brooms for Dogs (excorsizing more demons)

North Dakota vs Wisconsin: Split-skis (could there be a red sweep on State Street?)

UNO vs St Cloud: Split also, but pulling for Huskies

Alaska Anch vs Bemidji State: Time for Bemidji to get rolling, 3 points

Mankato State vs Denver: Denver sweep

Gophers are off and C.C. plays Yale/Air Force.

I'm going to go out on a limb and saying the Gophers won't get any points this weekend, but they won't lose either grin. Bye is always a tricky opponent. I hope they get their [PoorWordUsage] together after a week off though.

The series that intrigues me is UNO@SCSU. SCSU has been in the tank at least one night every weekend it seems like. UNO has only played 4 WCHA game but they are still unbeaten in their new conference. UND vs sconnie, sue vs becky, is there any way both teams can lose in that series?

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
