I have been working down in Whitewater wildlife management area towards Weaver and the wood ducks showed up late last week along with the hooded mergansers, but the mergies have since moved on.. All kinds of mallards around there, every morning they are sitting in a flooded cornfield next to the road. Just on Monday the spooners have shown up. Sure is hard to start working when there is all kinds of ducks flying around. Also a few sandhills around the area as well.

The wood ducks are sitting on their nests, seems the houses are being used more than other years.Maybe a good sign for the future.

No. No waterfowl will raise two broods in the same year that I know of. Most will renest if the first attempt is unsuccessful however - I think that's where people get confused and say "second hatch" sometimes.

I still have a pair of buffies and a couple pairs of Bluebills hanging around. The bluebills have been hear awhile now so either they are going to stay the season or they know something we don't wink.

I am reporting that I had seen several flocks of geese flying around and into Cleary Lake as I biked around it! You could sure tell the juvies were having there dips and spins in the air which is great humor!

Won't be long now! grin

I around quite a bit for work and the last two weeks there has been tons of geese working the freshly cut fields. Seems like all the geese are flying now but the ducks are a different story. I have seen some that look like they just hatched in the last couple of weeks.

This past week I spent the whole week on Eagle Lake near Cromwell and saw alot of duck and was surprised at how many divers were in the area two broods of Bluebills, one brood of redheads and a few ring necks were there along with a bunch of mallards. Out of all of these birds I only saw one young hen mallard with a small duckling the rest of these ducks were all able to take flight as I watched them fly in and out of the bay we were staying on. Should be a good opener if your in the right area of the state.

Guess ill be the first to report from the morning!

Our party got 15.. the east wind really killed us having to take a lot of over head shots. Didnt hear to much other shooting. Hope to get a few more tonight Ill be taking my 11yr old cousin out tonight for his first shoot so I really hope to get a little action or at least a crow (that looks like is about to do damage):)

how did everyone else do?

Pope county very few geese right now. There are a few flocks here and there but way below normal. early hatch must have promoted some type of false migration.

As I posted in a different spot we seen one and shot one in Isanti county. We did do a little scouting and found a good spot with some geese for tomorrow morning.

I was surprised by the number of mallards flying around.

Ended up with 3 this morning running traffic but had a ton give us a look but wouldn't quite commit. Will be trying a little different set up tommorrow to hopefully persuade them a little more.

I could have had quite a few mallards though.

AWESOME hatch of redheads, pins, cans, mallards, teal and shovelers this year in western NoDak! I also have the unique privilage of driving through the state and back every 2 weeks. STRONG hatches in the dl area as well. Tonight in a 12 mile stretch of hwy 94 I passed by 4 fields with multiple thousands of honkers. One had 10k strong. I wrote down mile markers, pm me if you have your early season NoDak stamps smile

I always get uneasy when I hear record numbers or near record numbers, and why are those geese in such massive flocks already ? Maybe that's why we haven't hardly seen a goose since it opened. 4 different counties I hunt in and it's not worth trying, there are few around or they just don't want to fly ? Last year record ducks or something and I'm not sure we saw any ducks, is it tough to find fields for geese ? It's all corn and beans primarily and with no small dairy farmers anymore they aint choppin corn or planting oats ? So the honkers moved west to find the fields ?

The numbers could be low in your area but high elsewhere, not based on your area. You say the same stuff every year about this topic. The Molt Migration is going on now with the NW wind lately so most of these flocks are bigger than the locals. Happens every year and is is when the hunting picks up.

All I know is that with the great rainfall northern NoDak got this year, potholes are full of ducks and geese. Being a MN duck hunter my whole life, it just blows my mind every time I drive by a pothole. In MN, there'll be a family, maybe 2 in a good body of small water. I've seen several potholes under an acres with over 100 ducks in them. And every little splash of water has at least a couple families. I can't wait to see what this place looks like during migration. I was in nodak about 5 years ago and saw the beginnings of it. Oh man, can't wait!!!!

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
