Waterfowl Reports

Field on the edge of Carlos Avery. Nothing. Saw way more geese than yesterday. Took the safety off twice but never shouldered the gun.

Hunted near the south metro over water. 2 geese and 2 doves down. Birds did not want to be on water and most avoided me spread for the fields. It was hilarious to watch my 40 pound Brittany retrieve geese. He can barely get them in his mouth but he finds a way to swim back with the bird.

Hunted some ambush spots Monday (no decoys - waiting near loafing spots or fly-ways)in the South Metro. Two of us got four geese and came really close to limiting out if a flock would have been 30 yards closer. They were flying only 25 feet off the ground. I got my two geese on a small marsh/bog.

Saw about 200+ mallards and Woodies. Pretty much had ducks on every water hole we ran into. 50-60 Mallards lit off of the one small hole where I got the two geese.

Can't wait for the duck opener!

Our crew ended up with 24 for 3 days of field hunting here in the south metro. I was in Oregon so I missed out on some decent early Goose action. frown

I was out at my parent's house yesterday evening shooting my bow and the geese and ducks were thick! This is in Washington County, SE of Hugo. I wasn't too excited when I didn't see many last weekend out there, but it was crazy last night with geese circling all over the place, lots of mallards going in and out.

Geese are thick up in the Northern part of the state, fields were not hard to find. Had a good hunt this morning for two of us, cacklers/giants were eating up the spread and yesterday took the dog with and he is still learning but shot 6 though... I will post pics sometime through the season goes on.

good luck everyone!

Washington county lake on Sunday. Only saw 2 loners and we got them both. No flocks. Not very much shooting around either. Pleased with the amount of ducks in the air at first light.

Yup, snows as well...had 5 snows come in the decoys before we shot our first honkers on Sunday morning. Only if it was this Saturday....

On Sunday I saw a single snow with about 200 geese by my sister's place up there, Quack. She's 6 miles south of the Pool... you know the Pool... wink

After being up there this past weekend, I couldn't take it anymore. I bought some dekes and am headed back up next weekend to lay some wood. Geese everywhere around there.

Well, I shot my limit but not the type of ducks I wanted. There was about 100 teal on the slough I was hunting. They got up and I decided to shoot one just to get on the board. Shot once and five of them fell. 30 seconds or so later I shot a drake mallard. 2 shots and maybe 90 seconds into the season, I was picking up decoys watching tons of Mallards fly around.

Waited till well after shooting time to walk into a spot this morning; didn't want to go the 1/2 mile only to find somebody had come in from the other side...after seeing ducks work and not hearing any shots, figured it was empty...was treated to a flock of about 200 blue wing constantly buzzing the dekes every 10 minutes or so. They were flying too tight for me to take a clean shot...never saw another species of duck this morning. Sounded like WW3 started in eastern SD...I'd be surprised if Scheels has any steel shot left by tomorrow afternoon. Lots of guys picking up field spreads when I was driving back into town this morning.

What a morning six of us limited on teal, mallards and woodies. As usual teal came in first mixed with woodies and then mallards. The fog rolled in heavy later in the morn. and the mallards just appeared like ghosts. Almost forgot two geese also.

I will second that it sounded like WW3 but I was in western MN. 2 guys 6 mallards and 6 teal before 9 a.m. Best opener for us in years.

Well, today was a big kick to the groin. Plenty of birds but my shooting was awful. I have had off days shooting before but nothing like this. Shot a box of shells and ended up with 2 teal and a woodie. Wiffed on quite a few mallards and woodies. When walking back to the truck a flock of woodies, flock of mallards, and a flock of 4 pintails landed exactly where my decoys were.

Friend and I were west of Delano and we did great. Lots of shooting, total misses. Had a great time out in the blind and we didn't have to clean a thing. All wood ducks. No teal at all despite there having been many on the lake a few days earlier. It pretty much shut down by 830 or so. How did anyone shoot ducks when the opener was a noon?

Carlos Avery. 6 0f us in 3 boats .21 bwt on opener. Lots of ppl. Kids jumped some local streams in afternoon and got a few woodies Got there at 2 am and were beat bad. Sunday morning. 1 goose i ringneck 1 bwt.9 woodies. Went to 2 different spots and left because we counted 9 trucks at one and 13 at the other. These are NOT big bodies of water. Thank heavens for plan C. Great opener in my book. Plenty of misses. Box of shells in the first half hour. It is usually the last day before I start hitting them .

The last year the opener was at noon two buddies and I were done by 1 oclock. Great opening day. 3 guys and we were done 15 minutes into shooting time. 4 mallards, 1 spoonie and the rest bwt. Sunday was the worst sunday iv ecxperienced on opening weekend. I knew the earlier opener would greatly effect sunday's hunt. Shot 9 for two guys on sunday. 4 mallards and the rest bwt...but we only missed 2-3 birds. All the ducks flew before shooting time. Would have easily limited both days if it opened at 9 on saturday. Time to write Landwehr a letter.

The best Opener i have ever had in my 18 years. Would not care if i don't get a single duck for the rest of the season, might just call it quits and wait until next years opener. wink

Right around the triple digit mark out west. Mainly filler ducks. Some colored mallets but mostly shoot to ID. Geese must have really been harrassed in the area. No lookers even though leased slough was off limits to roost busters and youth scare away day. Hope the pressure is on up north to help push some new action in.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
